My "random" advice to friends would be... "Pick your battles, because life is too short"  Stick to what is worth fighting for and spend your efforts on those things, some things are not worth the battle - like getting a kid to eat his peas when it's obvious he hates them and in the end it may not be a battle you will win anyways. Yet, obeying parents is something that requires more time and attention and certainly worth the time and effort spent to develop and enforce. Ask yourself, "what is worth fighting for",  or after a battle, ask yourself, "was that worth it or worth the time, effort, fight, argument, emotional upheavel, and discord?"
