wife's family vs. husband

I need to write.. it's been a while and writing or typing is an outlet for me.

On the 18th my baby was almost dropped by her dad. It's really hard because he was trying to adjust her in a very oversized blanket and she slipped out from the folds. She was caught, she didn't get hurt or anything. The hard part is my mom and how she is taking it. Before the incident my mom told DH that he handled our daughter like a sack of potatoes and he bounced her a little bit and pretended to throw her over his shoulder. My mom started to get angry about that and kissed Azriel goodbye because we were trying to leave a campsite to go home. Then James tried to readjust Azriel in the blanket and the only thing that anybody saw was Azriel start to fall. Now my whole family thinks that he was being spiteful and handling her roughly when he wasn't. It's very hard on me emotionally when it's my husband against my family because that leaves me in the middle with both parties expecting me to take their side. All I know how to do is defend each side against the other in the hopes that they don't hold grudges.

i don't know what to do. James was getting along so well with my family and then this happened. One Aunt is telling me that if my LO got badly injured the state would take her away until they figured out what happened. My mom is saying that if James pulls a michael jackson (hanging his kid over a balcony, or anything as stupid) that she'll report him.

I know that part of the problem is that James shows off infront of my family. At home accidents just don't happen. He wakes up as soon as she starts moving in the middle of the night, he reads her stories, hes like any other dad because he doesn't really know what to do with her. He works 50 hours a week so he doesn't really get to see her even though he lives with her. He wakes up and goes to work and by the time he gets home shes sleeping. Normally when I take her anywhere with me it's so family can see her and hold her but when James comes its competition between him and my family and they all think that he sees her all the time.

They know that James loves Azriel but they think that hes careless and dangerous with her.
