Why has my country turned into Chickenlittleland?
There’s screaming in the streets:
“OH MY GOD!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!! THERE ARE AMERICANS WHO MIGHT NOT DIE BECAUSE THEY’RE TOO POOR TO PAY FOR DOCTORS!!!”
“OH MY GOD!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!! I MIGHT HAVE TO ACTUALLY WRITE A CHECK TO THE IRS AT SOME POINT IN MY LIFE!!!”
“OH MY GOD!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!! IF THEY ADMIT GLOBAL WARMING IS TRUE I MIGHT HAVE TO SEPARATE MY PAPER AND PLASTIC!!!”
“OH MY GOD!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!! SEXUALLY ACTIVE TEENAGERS MIGHT BE ABLE TO LEARN HOW THEY GOT AIDS!!!!”
“OH MY GOD!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!! HOMOSEXUALS MIGHT BE TREATED LIKE PEOPLE!!!
“OH MY GOD!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!! WE MIGHT STOP KILLING IN THE NAME OF GREED!!!
What has happened to my country? Why have we got a massive group of people who simply cannot stop and think? Really. What is it that makes people hear a partial piece of an almost-interesting bit of an opinion piece and then drop shitloads of total screaming panic to everyone they know and anyone who might possibly be within earshot?
And God Help You All if you happen to be the one to take a moment and dig for the actual facts of the case. Do you have any idea what happens to the person who brings the voice of reason into the mad dash for the great cosmic grocery store? You are automatically converted into the Angel of Death, Hitler, and Satan himself.
“But all I said was, we should actually READ the healthcare plan. It doesn’t actually call for socialized healthcare.”
“But all I said was, we’ve been at war for almost 10 years - the money’s gotta come from somewhere.”
“But all I said was, the scientists who’ve been studying this for decades are universally pretty sure that if we don’t curtail our heedless destruction of the planet’s finite resources we’re going to all have a personal experience with crispy critters. Maybe we should consider our options.”
“But all I said was, putting our heads in the sand and shouting “IT’S NOT HAPPENING! IT’S NOT HAPPENING!” is really screwing over a whole generation of our young people. Perhaps we should look at the facts.”
“But all I said was, they ARE people! Why can’t we treat them like people?”
“But all I said was, isn’t it about time for the war to end? Do we expect it to last forever?”
When did it become illegal, immoral, and downright satanic to rationally consider the issues by looking at the facts and considering all sides?
When did it become good form to automatically panic when the person you’ve decided to hate begins to take a breath preparatory to speaking a word? If-- The-- Have-- That’s all it takes to set people off these days. It doesn’t matter what’s said, only who’s saying it.
When did we stop being the United States and turn into the Divided Camps of America?
