Confessions of a SuperMom

I'm not perfect. But they sure think so.

Last week we had an AWESOME couple of days enjoying the nice weather and sunshine. As most moms do when preparing for our day trips I bought new bottles of sunblock for the kids. I saw a sale for a super waterresistant kid sun block with an SPF of like 75 and didn't hesitate to buy it. I never thought about whether or not the kids would have a bad reaction to it since we've always used sunblock on them.

However, a few hours after applying the spray on my kids, my daughter began to develop a red, itchy and slightly raised rash. It was notan immediate reaction and I thought it was weird that it took a few hours to develop but when it was fully up she was very uncomfortable.

I called the doctor's emergency line and he gave me recommendations to treat it.

But now - with several weeks of the summer to go I must search for a sun block that will be safe and gentle on my little mama. Can you guys tell me what you use or recommend any brands for her that will fully protect her from the sun but should not cause an allergic reaction?

I do admit that I was slapped with guilt since I bought and applied the lotion on her. She's MUCH better now and free from the itchies. But I still feel bad for not putting more thought into a pretty important purchase.

I'm sorry..it probably has PABA. So ,anything without PABA should be okay.

The most common allergic reactions occur with sunscreens that contain PABA-based chemicals. If you develop a rash to a sunblock, check the label to see if PABA is an ingredient.

This happened to me a few weeks ago.  I had a reaction to the same brand of sunscreen that I've been using for years--the same type of rash as your daughter.  One of the pharmacists in my CVS drugstore recommended a PABA-free brand called Blue Lizard, and so far I've been OK with it.

Good luck to you and your daughter!
