My husband and I took our 6 year old son to the doctor this morning with yet another UTI. He had one about 3 months ago, and one previous before that about 12 months ago. The doctor gave me a presription and then said that she wanted to run some tests on him to see if he has some thing that causes urine to flow back into the kidneys. I don't remember what its called. Does anyone know anything about this? I looked it up on webmd and it said something about having surgury if its severe. He has to be at the hospital Wednesday morning for 2 tests, so if anyone has gone through this, let me know what to expect.
~Edit~
Well we got done at the hospital for testing, and the doctor that did the tests say that he is just fine. He doesn't have the reflux disease the other doctor thought he had! But, they still don't know why he keeps getting UTI's? At least he's okay.
Comments:
is he circumsized or not circumsized? sometimes babies who are not circed can have issues with UTIs if they are not cleaned properly between the foreskin and the head of the penis. just a thought. honey many children have issues like this who are circed as well. i hope it is nothing serious and just a mild disposition towards getting then. poor honey! i am sure it hurts
The doctor scheduled 2 tests. One that is an ultasound of his kidneys and the other is where they use a catheter to put dye in his kidneys to see if there are any problems.
My son is almost 6 years old now, but when he was a baby he kept getting UTI's and he would cry when he went pee. We brought him to the doctor and they did the same 2 tests on my son, turns out his urine was going into his kidney and then draining back out. I would notice his urine stream would kind of go out and in - back and forth, instead of a constant steady stream.... Well they put him on a antibiotic for the first 3 years of his life, took him back in when 2 years later at 5 yo and had the tests done again, thank god he had grew out of his urinary reflux! The first test is pain free-ultrasound. The 2nd test is painful, being they have to put a catheter in and inject a dye into his kidneys to find out if the ureter flaps are weak.. Good luck with everything- I hope he is fine:)

My older daughter (now 6) used to get UTIs all the time (ages 1-5). We never did find out why. She had an appointment years ago at the hospital to do some radiology tests - found out when we got there, they were very invasive and painful, and not necessarily recommended for children. But there was a newer procedure we could do. Cancelled the radiology appointment. Tried to get the other thing done. Doctor didn't ever do a prior authoriztion; gave her a 1-month anitbiotic prescription. Also told me to watch her wipe after pottying, to make sure she went front to back. After awhile, she just got better - I guess she outgrew whatever the problem.
Anyhow, what you are describing is some kind of urinary regurgitation. Basically one or more of the valves from the kidneys to ureters to bladder are dysfunctional. This is what they were going to look for with my daughter.
Sometimes medicines help. Other times, a catheter is used short-term to collect the urine so it doesn't back-flow. In more serious cases, the type of surgery needed would be to repair or replace the defective valve(s). As with any surgery, there will be risks. You will need to discuss those with your doctor. The surgery would likely be very short, and probably wouldn't involve more than a night or 2 to observe post-op recovery.
Best of luck to you and your little guy.
