Scattered Thoughts from a Cluttered Mind

~~ Saving money on clothes: Years ago when I needed a holiday outfit for my youngest son

but didn't want to spend a chunk of money for a suit he may only wear a few times. I found a pair of dress pants and a sportcoat at a local thrift shop for $2.00 each! The sportcoat was really nice but missing a button. I went to a fabric store and found shiny brass-type buttons and not only replaced the missing one but the other two to balance out the look. Turned out fabulous! It became a really nice dress outfit that he can wear for church and/or special occasions for only a total or $6! A little sprucing up, mending, alterations and/or embellishments of thrift shop clothing can give you great looks for only pennies on the dollar! He wore the outfit twice, and I passed it along to another mom, and her son wore it twice and she passed it along to another mom, and her son wore it twice before it was retired to the rag bin.

~~ Saving Money on Wrapping Paper: After Christmas, the rolls of paper get marked way down so we get a couple of rolls that don't look like Christmas paper (solid colors, stripes, etc) So throughout the year, we have a supply of wrapping paper that is much cheaper than buying paper for each occasion.
The other wrapping papers are so expensive that this saves quite a bit if you have several gifts to wrap. We found a roll of solid white that works for all occasions and then put a pretty bow on it to match the occasion.

~~ Saving MORE money on wrapping paper -- Many years ago, out of sheer desperation, I learned this tip and have never forgotten it. I was wrapping teacher gifts for my children, and I was gonna wrap them with tissue paper and ribbon. Well, my son was eating breakfast at the same time (need I say more?) My tissue paper was ALL ruined (here's were the desperate part comes in!) I knew I didn't have any gift bags I needed quite a few and they can get costly!! THEN I remembered I had a package of 50 white lunch bags!!! I put each gift in a bag and folded it over and held that down with the gift tag! Add some ribbon or a bow and it is very festive (and cheap)!!

~~ Cut Wrapping Paper Waste: I have a tip that my whole family has been using for years to cut down on paper waste and to recycle too. We all sew Christmas fabric bags and use them for most gifts. Whatever bags you and your family get this year you put away and use for next year. We also take
advantage of after Christmas sales to get fabric on sale to cut costs. Keep the bags simple and make lots of different sizes. we still have to make more most years as some go out of the family and thus out of the loop but it is much simpler. We also use non-holiday fabric for birthday gifts too. I admit
to wrapping some small kids gifts in paper so they can have the fun of ripping the paper off.

~~ After Christmas Sales: Here is something else to think about with the after holiday sales. I buy everything that's red....and save it for Valentine's Day. Even candy canes, when put together, make
hearts! The green? Why St.Patrick's Day of course!

~~ Recycling Christmas Cards: This is something I've done for years. Every year I go through my Christmas cards after the holidays and figure out ways to cut and/or fold them into gift enclosure cards. Each year I come up with enough of these to take care of gift enclosures for presents the following year. During the year I do the same with any other type cards received. Also, card fronts can do double duty as postcards, which gives me a collection I can use for quick messages or even business responses at the lower postage rate.

~~ Saving Money When Wrapping Large Presents: When I have a rather large present to wrap and do not want to use costly wrapping paper or large bag specifically for large presents, I will use a disposable tablecloth. The cost per square foot is much less than for wrapping paper and I always get
compliments on how it looks when it is wrapped shiny side out. Just be sure to use very sticky tape - transparent tape will not hold very well.
