Ginny's Secret Stuff

Just me, tellin' it like it is.......

Do you remember when you first played Tetris

You did play Tetris - right?  I'm not "THAT" old, am I?  I understand if I said PONG, you might not remember that, but TETRIS - Let's see, it was 1984 (yeah, I looked it up just now).

FYI - here's a PONG screen (circa 1975) ~ (I had this for my TV - and it's hard to imagine that we actually thought this was difficult back then!!)

I purchased two of the first NES systems - one for me, and one for my son and his wife.  I was still with my ex, and he absolutely hated video games.  We were so ready for a divorce and had been for awhile.  So, when he said "If you buy any video games, I'm divorcing you".  I saw that as a double-opportunity - I can have a video game system and get rid of the jerk, at the same time!

Then there was Tetris on Game Boy, too.

I still  have that original Game Boy - the very first model, with the black and gray screen.  Wonder if it still works.  I think I'll check it out later.

Okay, so what made me think about this Tetris stuff?  Other than the fact that my mind works overtime with all sorts of random silly thoughts ---------------

I've been playing Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook.  Yesterday I reached 2nd place among my FB friends - 91,000 points!  YAY!  But, if you've played this game, then you'll understand (maybe), when I say that those colored jewels have embedded themselves in my brain.  At the oddest times, suddenly I see images of the colored pieces, and my mind moves them around to create matches, just as if I was still playing it!  I dream about it!

I remember having this same experience in the 1980's while playing Tetris.  I imagined those odd shapes floating down out of the sky, and my mind, twisting and turning them to attempt to make them fit together as quickly as possible.

Has anyone else had these strange hallucinations?  Or, is it just me?  Please tell me, it's not just me.  Oh, no, is it just me????  It is, isn't it?  Oh, I'm doomed!  (LOL)

After writing about this experience, I decided to read more in Wikipedia about Tetris, and found this statement.......  (I had no idea, when I began writing this!)

The game can also cause a repetitive stress symptom in that the brain will involuntarily picture tetris combinations even when the player is not playing the game (the Tetris effect), although this can occur with any computer game showcasing repeated images or scenarios.

Just found more (I love research) ~ the TETRIS EFFECT

Soooooooooooooooooo, I guess I'm not any stranger than anyone else who plays these games.  WHEW!

After visualizing those strange images in my wacky mind (which, I guess isn't so wacky after all),  I began to relate the shapes, moves, successes and blockages to LIFE.

Think about it.....................

GRAVITY - pulls the puzzle pieces down to the bottom.

When playing, one must twist and turn the piece so it lands at the bottom in the most advantageous position.

We have GRAVITY in LIFE.

We must twist and turn the pieces of our life to create what is best for all concerned.

But.............................

Sometimes we are caught at a disadvantage, such as in the game.  Sometimes the piece that falls down from the top, just doesn't "fit" into the scheme of things.  We can twist and turn and attempt to force the piece to fit.  However sometimes, it's just impossible.  Regardless of what we do, we've hit a roadblock, and the pieces just won't come together at that particular time.

Sometimes we must start the game of Tetris over again, when all the pieces have fallen and do not fit together.  That's when they get jammed up and reach the top - stopping the game.

So, too, it can be with the game of LIFE.  Sometimes we just need to "let go", and allow the mis-matched pieces of our life to fall where they may, and start all over again.

There will be some situations that are beyond our control.  Just accept those, and move on, out of that stagnant place of attempting to control something you can't.  It will only cause frustration.

Repeat after me:  "IT IS WHAT IT IS".

And, move forward into the next moment of your life.  When one door closes, another one opens.

When one puzzle piece doesn't fit, there is one that will.

I LOVED Tetris!

After playing game after game of it, then going to bed & closing my eyes, I'd see those shaped pieces still floating down.  I'd think, "boy, am I addicted or what"?

I still occasionally get the "Tetris effect" if I go too many rounds on hubby's 360. The same thing can happen with Super Mario or most side scrollers too. Great post. Thanks for writing it, I'm sharing with my hubby now.
