Today Shayan and I went to Taekwondo. We both broke out boards with an elbow strike. I was so proud of him.Not for breaking, but because he stood up and paid attention through the whole class. And I could tell he was proud of himself too. We went home to show Tyler what we learned. Tyler, a former black belt has been hesitant to come back to class. He said he had been practing his old forms while we were gone. I asked him to show me. I was so amazed. It was the same movements that I remembered a 10 year old doing, barely able to keep his balance. and now there is this tall square shouldered young man in my living room kicking and jumping. I told him he really looked great and should come back to class. He got that cute self-conscious smile that I rarely see from a teenager today (It's so damn cute, but you don't dare tell him that) He said something like, "when I do taekwondo, it makes me feel like... what's that word???" I said "confident" he said yeah that. Yeah that feeling that all of us have been deprived of for so long. Nice to have it back again.
