My SIL's cousin, Trisha, needs your prayers.  She is 8 years old, and up until 4 days ago, was seemingly healthy.  About a week ago, her father took her to California for a vacation.  While there, she fell and scraped her knee.  Her father, knowing she is a drama queen, didn't think much of it when she complained of how much it hurt.  Until Sunday, when she began hallucinating, had a slight fever, and couldn't move her legs, and could barely move her arms.  He took her to a local hospital, and when they got her there, her fever was up to 107, and they sent her to a nearby children's hospital, telling the father that it was MRSA (they had done a culture earlier, and just confirmed the results), and possibly two other infections that they do not yet have confirmed.  Sunday night, Monday, and today, they have been trying to stabilize her.  She was given the strongest antibiotics they have (a new variety), had to have a blood transfusion, traecheotomy, they debated amputating both her legs, and have been battling her racing 300bpm heartrate.  Tonight, they got her stabilized enough to send her to Milwaukee, which is a better place for her to be.  Even with her stabilized, they say she has less than a 50% chance of survival over the next 24 hours.  Please pray (or send good thoughts, wishes, whatever you believe) for Trisha and her father, who is currently on the 4 hour drive to meet his daughter.  This little girl needs all the help she can to fight this!

*EDIT:  Thanks in advance for your prayers and thoughts.  This little girl only has her father to be with her, and could use everyone's thoughts and prayers with her.

UPDATE 8/5: This morning, Trisha's heart stopped, and they rushed her to surgery.  They found clots in her heart, and she is having open heart surgery to remove them, so that hopefully none reach her brain.  They are circulating her blood with a machine for the time being, and last I heard, had not yet restarted her heart.  The doctors say that if they can get her heart restarted after surgery that her chances of survival improve dramatically, and are very hopeful.  Will update again when I find out more.  Thanks for all of the support.  Trisha really needs it.

SECOND UPDATE 8/5: Some good news finally.  Trisha is out of surgery for today and stable.  They had to amputate one leg because the infection killed it (but while still at the second hospital, had almost amputated both, and decided not to).  The good news about her leg being amputated is that that is where the source of the infection was, so since they removed it, the infection in the rest of her body has weakened.  Her heart still hasn't been restarted, they are going to wait until tomorrow to try.  She may need 4 or 5 heart surgeries tomorrow, though.  The best news though, is that there was no damage to her heart.  They think it stopped because of high potassium levels, which is apparantly an easy fix.  Please keep praying, she still needs lots of help!

Update 8/6: This is the message I got from SIL:

Yesterday she went into open heart surgery when I got there for about 6 hours because they thought she had a large blood clot in her left ventricle. They went in and found it was just the blood sitting there but was not clotted. They also checked over her whole body and found the leg she had pain in when this whole thing started was completely dead below the knee. So they had to amputate her left leg a few inches above the knee. The good news is they think since it was only dead below the knee that they found the source of the infection and they were afraid it was spreading up her leg. That was the reason for the amputation. They said without the amputation she has no chance of survival. They considered her surgeries a success, but she still is "at very high risk of dying." She was however stable on the machine that is playing the role of her heart and lungs throughout the whole surgery and through last night.

Today: They did dialysis last night to bring her potassium levels down in her blood which was due to failing kidneys. They also think this is the reason her heart stopped yesterday. However this morning, the dialysis did not bring her potassium levels down as much as they wanted. Also this morning, she had another open heart surgery to put a pacemaker in. They said they when/if her heart starts on its own or if they have to start it themselves, they need her heart to be in rhythm as soon as possible.

After seeing her, it helped my family a lot because we were able to put everything into reality instead of just hearing about it. When I did see her, she had a little plastic shield over her chest since they said they will be going in the many times in the next day or two, so her chest was open. We also did see her stub on her leg because they only had a small cloth covering the very end of it.

The best news we have so far is that after the amputation, she no longer had blisters and pustules covering her entire body and it actually looked like normal skin with faint red blotches all over. That is another reason they think they got rid of the source of the infection

Second Update 8/6: I got a call from my SIL earlier, and she said that Trishas heart has been restarted, and it's beating about 90 bpm. It's not regular, but it's beating. The bad news for the day is that she has to have her other leg amputated because it's purple.  They checked to see if it was still alive, and from what I've heard, I am thinking that they ended up amputating.  They were going to try for below the knee, to make it easier on her with the prosthetic leg.

Update 8/16:  Sorry I haven't updated sooner.  Trisha is still alive, and doing better.  They just closed up her chest on Friday, and are going to be doing the last surgeries on her legs, hopefully soon.  They did have to go back, and amputate her second leg above the knee, and are worried about fitting her with prosthetics.  She is not yet awake, but is showing positive signs.  She is no longer hooked up to the ECMO machine, and has been taking many breaths on her own.  The breathing machine is no longer breathing for her, but is a supplement to her breathing.  She has been coming in and out of semi-consciousness, and once in a while will fight with her breathing tube, and has been responding with simple actions when asked (such as opening mouth, etc.).  Her kidneys and liver are still not functioning right, but the doctors do not seem overly concerned with this at the moment.  Her brain scans have shown no damage to her brain, but they will not be certain until Trisha wakes up just what the damage is.

ok ummm as a fellow mrsa victim let me tell u that there are only two antibotics that help to make it dormet (however i cant recall the name so ill find out tomorrow and let u all know) second take some antibactieria gel stuff that everyone is always using on our hands and rub it into the cut. i had it in four or five different places on my body and i used the hand santiizer to clean them atleast 3 times a day. hospitals also give u mrsa so make sure that who ever comes in contact with her washes there hands with soap and water and uses the santizer. im keeping her in my prayers. and if u have any other questions or anything let me know.

knaqsmom- the problem is not that she has MRSA in her skin.  The problem is that it has gotten into her blood stream.  Thanks for the suggestions, though.  I will keep them in mind, since this seems to be getting to be more common.

Kristal-

It wasn't even a skinned knee.  It was a scratch.  It all started over a small, tiny little scratch.  Now she could lose her life.  Because so many people think they need antibiotics for every little thing.
