Okay, so the last TWO days my son has come home telling me he was bored and then the next day telling me he had to stand a while because he didn't want to sit indian style on a rug...to ME as his parent this was alarming as it had only been TWO days into the school year.  I did believe what my son told me until I could speak to his teacher.  He was partially correct and partially incorrect with his information he gave to me...

The teacher DID tell me that my son was bored on day one probably because he wasn't quite 'getting' what the teacher was having the students do so to him, he was probably bored.  Now if he understood what was expected of him and what was going on, he may not have been bored.  The teacher did say once my son got use to the routine he wouldn't 'feel' bored because he would KNOW what to do and what IS expected of him.

The teacher DID say that Trevor wouldn't sit indian style on his square on the rug, but that she DID NOT make him stand AT ALL!!  He did finally give in and sit indian style.  Now for the participating aspect...Trevor says that the singing and dancing they do in class right now is 'something his little brother does at home.'  The teacher wasn't sure how old my other son was, but when I told her two, she said that the dancing and singing they do for RIGHT NOW is about a four year old level(my son is five) and there are still some four year olds in his class that are due to turn five on or before September 30th here. But that this singing and dancing was more for the students to get their wiggles out before having to sit on the rug and not for any kind of learning tool that they would take with them in their academic career..lol..so I am NOT worried there!

Socially, she said my son is considered one of the MORE POPULAR students in his class and at luch/recess he has no problem with kids wanting to sit next to him or playing with him.  Academically however, I do need to work on his name with him(writing it all out) and work on him recognizing his letters and numbers.  He can count to 20 and say all of his alphabet, but can't quite recognize them yet on a piece of paper or card.  She said they will work on this stuff all year, but by Novemeber/December he should know how to write his name fully and say his alphabet/numbers to 20 and recognize all of his alphabet on a paper as well as recognize his numbers to 20.  We will work on that at home too!  She did give me an idea which I think is wonderful to help him spell...I will do what she suggested!!!

Overall, I did have a good conversation with his teacher and think so far she is great and communicates well to the parent about any concerns or praises she has about the students in her class..which is what I ask of any teacher/instructor!

Oh, and she did say my son is a 'sweet boy':)

We sent our children to private school from K to 8th grade.

Every year the principal on parents night would begin her speech by saying:
"If you believe half of what your child tells you about us, we will believe half of what your child says about you."

She would go on to say keep open communication with the teacher no matter what the child tells you.

And its so true.  The willingness to have a good repore' with a teacher is the most excellent way to have your child get a good education.

You also can practice on a table writing his letters in shaving cream. You smear it on a table and trace it in the shaving cream. Makes it fun.

Trevor goes to a 'modified' school in Alexandria (city)...it is a PUBLIC school.  Modified meaning it is a school here that goes ALL YEAR round!

What is a modified school calendar?

Starting with the 2004-2005 school year, Samuel W. Tucker Elementary became the city's first school with a modified school calendar. Tucker students attend school the same number of days (183) as included in the traditional calendar, but have the option of attending up to 30 additional days of school. Tucker students begin school in July so they have less academic regression and more retention of information. The summer days are redistributed throughout the year so that students attend school for approximately nine weeks and have a break in between. During this break or extended learning session (intersession), the school hosts a two-week intersession where the school is open. Most parents have the option for their children to attend Tucker for extra learning while other students may be required to attend for additional review. For the convenience of families with children in other ACPS schools, the winter and spring breaks and the last day of school coincide with the traditional Alexandria City Public Schools calendar.
