I live in Las Vegas.  Also known as Sin City- and there is a reason for that.  Nevada is one of the few states that allows prostitution inside of brothels.  Ever heard of the 'Bunny Ranch'?  If so, you know it's, here, in Nevada.  Unfortunately, the prostitution doesn't stay inside the walls of a brothel.  There is prostitution everywhere in Las Vegas.  I can honestly say that I see prostitutes or "ladies of the night" like my old school mom calls them on every corner these days.  And I always catch myself asking the same question.

If I had the choice to vote for or against the legalization of prostitution, what would I choose?

I always come up with the same answer.

Let's look at the pro's of prostitution.  Many people argue that the legalization of prostitution would not only help control the spread of std's, but it would also decrease the amount of women who end up dead on a daily basis.  They also say that  legalizing prostitution would lower the money spent on trying to fix the problem, when in fact, they could make it into an industry that would bring in revenue to the country.

Points taken.  Now let me tell you how I feel.

First off, think about it.  Even if prostitution were to become legal; would the government really be able to control and regulate it?  Would they be able to follow up on restrictions that would put certain limitations of sexual conduct in the brothels?  I highly doubt it.  The argument of decreased crime is also iffy.  What about the trafficking of women all over the world.  It's bad now and it's illegal.  Imagine when it becomes legal, it'll be more in demand which will equal to higher crime.

Moving on.

Since when has it been okay to use "money for the government" as an argument against our ethics, morals, and values?  If prostitution becomes legal, our kids will be able to- one day, say,"Mrs. Doe, when I grow up, I want to be a hooker"... I mean, are you kidding me?  That would be my worst nightmare!!  And what about monogamy?  America's divorce rate is already in the gutter, can you imagine how bad it will get when men and women are being served sex, sex and more sex on silver platters?  Or what effects this will have on marriage and relationships.  How many families will be torn apart?  How would we explain the difference between love and sex and sex for money?  We wouldn't be able to.

And putting all this aside.  Women.  We have been through so much in such a short period of time.  Men are finally realizing what we can do and that we can handle just as much as they can- and if prostitution were to become legal, wouldn't we just encourage them to treat us like pieces of meat?  How degrading is that!  We cannot let ourselves walk backwards, we're doing so well towards our movement for equal rights to just throw it away.

And to make things worse.  Do we really want brothels and perverts coming into our towns.  Our neighborhoods?  Hell no, I sure don't.  So, instead of people making excuses on why prostitution should be legalized, they should start getting more serious about convicting the offenders who think the law is a joke.  I couldn't even begin to tell you how many hookers I see walk out of jail every single day.  It's ridiculous- and guess where they're at the next night?  When are we finally going to do something about this?  There needs to be a three times you're out law against prostitution and people involved.

What do you think?

Well I for one believe that Brothels are different from outright prostitution.  What a man and woman do behind closed doors, where we cant see what they are giving out, is none of my business as long as it is consentual.  BUT...hooking it out on the street, where my children and everyone else in the world, can see your nasties...is not ok.  If a woman is on the street and just asks a guy to have sex with her and there isnt money involved then it isnt a crime....but isnt it the same thing?  People do it all the time and nobody raises a fuss but if the man handed her $40 then its jail time.  I think that there should be places for these things because of the fact that it is going to happen regardless...why not regulate it in a way that it wont be up in our faces everytime we go out at night.  I'm not saying to make it all completely legal...just make it a stiffer penalty if it isnt in a set place for it.  Some place where their health and the publics is better protected though testing and monitoring.

Well, actually, prostitution is the exact same thing anywhere outdoors and inside.  You're trading money for sex.  But I do see what you mean.  Would you be okay with it being legalized all over the world as long as it were in a confined place?  And right, I get the whole "health" thing you brought up, but in most brothels where the women do get tested, they are allowed to go back to work- even if the results aren't confirmed yet.  Isn't this alarming to anyone?

Yes it is alarming.  That is what I am talking about.  We need TRUE regulations.  But as long as it is out on the street and it isnt seen as a controllable problem it will continue to get that kind of half-*ssed attitude from the people DOING the testing.  If we proved that we could control it then mabey the people working on these issues would have more compassion for the job.  If you see what you do as not helping the situation at all then you will do a half-*ssed job, but if you know that you are making a difference and what you do matters to people then you will try to do it to the fullest.  If we regulated it to brothels, "hotels", "clubs" or whatever you wanted to call it, and then held that decision up in every instance then mabey things would change.  Also, alot of men have wives or girlfriends and think they can get away with hookers because it is dark and nobody can see them...have them go to a place where they have to park outside where their car will be noticed and knock on a door where they can be seen.  I bet that will cut out at least a few of those pricks from getting away with it!  I am not saying that we could stop all illegal prostitution but at least we could cut down on alot of the other crimes and problems that it is a factor in.  (eg.- random murder, street drugs, abused women, FORCED prostitution, teen hookers, abortions, motherless and homeless children and women.......)  There are so many things affected by prostitution that all I can think about are these things when I see people question what to do about it.

There is no way to make it STOP...and the more we punish these women the worse off things in those areas will get.  You put them in jail and fine them....so they start selling drugs and prostituting even MORE to pay for them.  It is like chasing your own tail.  It wont get us anywhere but dizzy, frusturated, and upset.
