Meri's Home and Garden

A Wannabe Super Crunchy Hippie Mamma

There are only a couple things Ranger Daddy does that have the capacity to REALLY annoy me. One of those is happening right now. Our vacation starts today. Originally, we were going to hit the road about 7:30 this morning. Then RD took the truck to Brakes Plus because he thought the rear brakes might need a quick replacement of shoes before traveling. Nope, the rear axle seals need replacing. That was not a $100 fix we could do last week. That's a $300 fix we had to wait until this morning to go in. So then the plan was, get the truck in at 8:00, I'll do the last minute shopping, RD will nap for a couple hours, and we'll hit the road no later than 12:30/1:00. Well, I called the shop at about 11:20. Truck done. I go to talk with RD about getting up and down there. Keep in mind that for the previous two HOURS Yeled has been begging for a nap I've refused to give him because I wanted him to start the trip sleeping in the truck. It sets a good precedent for calm traveling. Eleven-twenty. I tell RD the truck is done and Yeled and I are pretty much ready. He rolls over, groans, and asks me to get him at noon.

Oooooooooooookay. Now if he actually gets up at noon, which I doubt at this point because we play this game every Thursday (he thinks he can go straight from night shift to day shift without a day to adjust his schedule and NEVER remembers from week to week), we will still be very lucky if we're heading north on I-25 by 2 pm. See, it will take him at least 30 minutes to wake up and get going. Then he has to walk down to Brakes Plus. That's another 30 minutes or so. Then he has to get gas, come back here, rearrange the cab while I bring down the rest of our luggage, and then we have to stop at Wal Mart for ice and a couple other things I couldn't manage with the stroller this morning. If it was me running into Wal Mart, the very last minute things would take about 15 minutes to pick up. With RD in tow, that errend alone will take at least half an hour more. And instead of asking me to make some sandwiches out of the cooler full of food on our counter, he will want to stop at Sonic or some such thing for a "hot" meal before we get going. By the time we get up to Denver, we'll be hitting going home traffic and Yeled will be hitting the limits of his wakeful car seat endurance. It's going to be a FUN start to our trip.

Yes, I gave up on stalling the nap. Yeled was just too desperate to be put to sleep. He went from screaming to sleeping exhausted toddler sleep in three minutes flat.

Know where we were originally supposed to be this time today? Mount Rushmore. If Ranger Daddy still thinks he can get there before dark, he's having serious delusions. Better to try for that stop on our drive home next week.

Oh, my gosh, dear. It's memories of vacations past with little ones. Except for that part about RD doing the errands. That's my everyday life.

Ew... that's not a good vacation start.  I sure hope things have improved!
