It's been a while since I've posted a journal entry. Chalk it up to lack of motivation to write one and/or a very hectic work schedule and personal life. Whatever the reason, today was a very important milestone in my life that deserves proper recognition: My daughter's first day of school.

I knew this day would come eventually, of course. I mean, did I really expect to hold onto that 5 pound, 6 ounce, tiny little baby forever? Even so, when did the Earth get sucked into that worm hole that made three years pass so quickly?
It's a bittersweet moment for sure. Most of me is really excited for Alyssa. She gets to leave her boring schedule of hanging out with me at the house while I work all day. She gets to make real friends, learn new things, and have fun with about a dozen other 3-year-olds. There is a small part of me, though, (ok a medium-large part) that wants to keep her all to myself for just one more year...or maybe 30 more years.
Yesterday, my last day with my toddler, Alyssa pushed my laptop to the side of my lap, dumped her cat, At, her elephant, Momar, and her other cat, Hallie, next to me and handed me her blanket as she climbed up onto the couch and snuggled up in the crook of my right arm. "Mommy, tuck us all in!" she commanded, and I did so happily.
The five of us just sat there and cuddled for a minute or two, then my sweet angel looked up at me, smiled, and said "It's just me and you, Mom!" then gave me a great big hug and kiss. Within 10 minutes, Alyssa and my right arm were asleep, Alyssa's head resting on Hallie, and the only sounds were of my little girl snoring while I tried to get my job done by pecking at my keyboard with my left hand. It was wonderful!
Then today happened. The first day of school. Alyssa would be in someone else's care at 7:45 in the morning, and won't come home to me until 2:55 in the afternoon. How on earth was I going to survive those 7 hours?!?
I was brave, though, for Alyssa's sake. Both my hubby and I got Alyssa up, fed, dressed, and ready to go. We took pictures, drove her to school, took more pictures, walked her to her class (the ONLY time this year such a thing is permitted), took more pictures, then said our goodbyes and left. I made it all the way home before letting the tears fall, but just barely.
Alyssa's teacher is a very sweet lady. At each of her students' places, she had placed a "Parent Survival Kit:"

It was perfect. Combined with Alyssa's classroom schedule (which I checked about every 10 minutes to see what she was up to), I made it through the day and into the long carpool pick-up line at the school.
I made sure At, Hallie and Momar were all waiting in the back seat, since Alyssa had asked the night before if they could all go with her to school. ("No, honey," I told her, "they don't allow animals in school.") When Alyssa got in, I asked how her day went, if she had fun, and if she made that lovely castle hat she was wearing on her head.
"Uh-huh!" Alyssa told me, holding up her hand with a frog sticker stuck to the back, "and look, Mommy! My teacher gave me a sticker, too! It's a frog! I think I'll share it."
"Aw, you're going to share your sticker with me?" I asked, touched by her generosity.
"No, Mommy, it's not for you! I'm going to share it with...Hallie!"

Thank you, nightowl. Ain't it the truth, though?
In two weeks, Alyssa will also be riding the bus to speech therapy at the nearby public school twice a week when the public schools start up. They'll pick her up at her preschool first thing in the morning, take her to speech for a 1/2 hour session, then bring her back to her preschool. But that's just too much for me to take right now!

Awww! Cara starts preschool on Tuesday, so I'm going to be in the same boat very soon! So glad that Alissa had a wonderful first day and that you survived too. I just love the survival kit!
Aww! She looks so grown up! Well, I still have Leland for another year, but I'm already so nervous about him starting school!
I'm glad to hear that you survived her first day! She looks so adorable in her first-day-of-school outfit!
