Would you then be saying a mother was wrong for reminding the principal of Constitutional Law? Would she then be 'whining to get her way'? Would you see what she did as the right thing?
Separation of Church and state does not automatically mean atheist. Christian does not automatically mean moral.
Why does it bother you so much? It's public school - for all. Not for any particular belief system. This is not an attack on Christianity; it's about the law!
**Update**
Thanks for the comments, ladies. I may not get around to thanking each of you personally for the discussion, but wanted to let you know I appreciate the discussion. It's been civil for the most part and I'm happy to see that.
If you are not one that is complaining, then good for you. You're someone willing to follow the law without issues. This is not about Christians vs. anyone, but the law. I would not be found of any overtly religious posters in a public school, period. I have no issues with a teacher wearing a cross, Star of David, or head covering. I have no issues with religion of any kind being taught in context of history or literature. What I don't believe in is any one presenting one line of belief as the only way in the public realm. In private, to each his/her own.
It seems that a couple of posters are assuming that I'm an atheist. Guess what? Nope, guess again. I firmly believe that everyone has the right to practice whatever they believe. I believe that if there is a Christian student prayer group, that it should be left alone unless other religious groups are forbidden.
Comments:
I just posted on another journal but I'll say it here too.
I'm Pagan and I don't care what faith would have been posted, I'd have objected, eVen if it was Pagan material!
Yep. Seems everyone's okay with it as long as it's THEIR religion being posted. So gov't has 2 choices - allow it for everyone or no one. So, what about a satanist's verse being posted? Westboro Baptist teachings? Would you be feeling so all inclusive then? I'm guessing not.
I don't understand why christians would want it in schools anyway. Christianity seems to be one of the most diverse religions - even JW's consider themselves christian.
That means you have to get into the business of deciding which form of christianity is the "right" one to teach.. and that's just as messy!
Actually, I would have nothing wrong with any of these being taught in a unit about religion and diversity and respecting the beliefs of others. You know, in the context of "some people believe...", as opposed to this is how it is.
This is not the situation that's currently on the popular journals. It's not acceptable for a public educational institution to be endorsing ANY religion.
