I knew the day was coming. It needed to come for the sake of my sanity. Our summer that once was blissful had suddenly turned into one of those nature shows on TV. The ones where you see the sweet little baby animal frolicking across the field and then along comes a pack of ferocious beasts attacking and tearing into it. You cover your eyes shrieking at the TV screen for the weaker animal to run and save itself, but then are suddenly consumed with a morbid fascination as you continue watching. That is what our household had become; survival of the fittest!
Today is the first day of school. I had every intention of making the transition from our carefree summer world to a more structured school schedule, but life had other plans. So instead, I decided to approach the morning like I approach a Band-Aid removal; quick-no easing into the situation. Yep. We went cold turkey this morning

Jesus said, "Lazarus, arise!" And the dead man did. I attempted that same approach with my dead to the world children. "Arise, dear children! Arise." I guess the fact that I am only a mother of six and not the son of God might have made a difference in the level of difficulty for my task. It took a while, but I eventually got the comatose bodies at least into standing positions. It was a lot longer, however, before real life awakened in them.

I had promised myself that "scary Mommy" would not appear today; there were plenty of days ahead for her to come for a visit. No matter what, I would not raise my voice, roll my eyes, throw up my hands in despair, pull out my hair, throw anything or lock myself in the bathroom; not when someone requested POP with his pancakes for breakfast, not when someone managed to get peanut butter and syrup stuck in her hair, not when someone lost one of his shoes, not when two started a wrestling match in the mountain of clothes dumped from the dresser, not when someone spilled canned cat food all over herself (blaming me for making her feed the cat!) and will probably smell like liver all day, not when time had dwindled to the point of sweat droplets forming on my forehead in dread that someone would miss the bus on day one...
I made a home cooked breakfast (I'm not talking frozen "homemade tasting" stuff from a box either!), I smiled brightly, I sweetly encouraged; an aura of goodwill permeated from my being as I took pictures to commemorate this special first day of school. I was a modern day June Cleaver minus the apron and a bra!

One day down! The school adventure has officially begun! What about you?
May all our children have a fantastic year! May our kids make good choices and good friends. I pray that their minds and spirits are renewed and that they grow mentally and emotionally; staying on the right path in life .
And may all of us also share in a school year filled with many blessings!

Hehe... mine are still both under 2 so no school yet! Check back in 2012 or 2013. :)
Well, you saw my thought bubble this morning - first day of school and NO MILK. I planned and organized all weekend too. Mom fail moment.
Ummmm..... "scarey Mom" comes here atleast once a week. This morning she was in full form.
I love the first day of school, but given this was the start of the 3rd week I am no longer as tolerant.
I agree though, my our kids learn and grow!
We go back September 9 and following the big yellow thing pulling away with sons #2 and 3... is the "back to school breakfast" at a friends house.... :)
Today was our 1st! Homemade breakfast managed to stay in their mouths-Of course I made them wear aprons(even as they brushed teeth)Only 2 complaints (shoes & belt) from my 3rd grader. Otherwise only 1 almost scarry mom moment! Have a great year everyone!!
