This was quite the weekend for medical issues. I'll start at the beginning. So Sunday we're literally walking out the door to go check out the new book & music exchange place when Mike's brother calls to say that their grandpa is in the hospital with just hours to live. Bummer. So he says he's on his way over to the hospital and will call us when he gets there with an update. He called back later to say Grandpa was on some machines and that he had congestive heart failure. He had actually died in the ambulance on the way from the nursing home to the hospital, but the EMT's brought him back, which they weren't supposed to do because he had a DNR. No one was really upset about it though. the EMT's had no idea. So anyway, his heartwas giving out and they had him on a few diff. medicatons to get the fluid out from around his heart and stuff, but he'll hang on a while longer. Yesterday (Monday) we had planned to go down and see him to say goodbye, but they had taken him off one of the machines andhe was doing OK! The meds were working and now he was awake, though still not talking. He's still not long for this world, but we've got a little while to go see him yet. No one's really freaking out or anything, everyone knows he's been ready to go since his wife died some 15 years ago, so they're just making him as comfortable as possible. As it happens, Mike's cousin had her baby yesterday too! A little boy named Caleb. We called and talked to her yesterday and she said everything went fine and they should be home by Thursday, so we'll see the baby then.
That's it for the hospital section, now on to the injuries! My little boy managed to hurt himself TWICE this weekend. He's not the most graceful 5 year old on the planet, LOL. Sunday he was running and happened to fall right on the only strip of concrete sidewalk in our backyard. You could hear his little knee POP! as it hit. He scraped most of the skin off his knee. Poor guy didn't start realy crying though till he saw the blood. We got him cleaned up and a band-aid on him and he limped around the rest of the day. Last night we were outside grilling and Jersey ran to the gate in the chainlink fence and flung it open as hard as he could. As he was running through the gate it bounced back and the little horse-shoe shaped latch thingy caught him right in the eyebrow. Mike said he was SURE he had poked his eye out, he was screaming so hard. Those latches have always been a concern of ours, since they're almost exactly at Jersey's eye level. So we try to make sure we keep them shut. Luckily he gets to keep his eye. He just has a big goose egg on his forehead. i swear people are going to think we beat him!
The funnest part of the weekend was definitely the Semi Honk Game. We live on a busy 2-lane highway where there are constant semis hauling coal between the mine and the power plant. Mike & Jersey stood out in the front yard making the "honk" motion to every truck that went by. They got 22 semis to honk! That has to be a record! It got me wondering... do kids even still do this anymore? When I was a kid my sister and I would try to get them to honk anytime we passed one on the highway. Everyone did it! I wonder if this might be a lost childhood activity. With video games and cable TV, kids don't do these simple fun things anymore. So sad.
