Mercury's effects on health still raises questions August 30, 6:17 PMDetroit Alternative Medicine ExaminerVickie Jackson Previous Comment Print Email RSS Subscribe Subscribe Get alerts when there is a new article from the Detroit Alternative Medicine Examiner. The Federal Drug Administration has recently declared that mercury is safe for use in dental fillings, for example, citing only a "moderate risk". (See http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm173992.htm) Meanwhile, the Department of Natural Resources warns people to avoid consumption of fish containing mercury, especially here in the Great Lakes region. Then there's the historical factor of mercury poisoning of those who were in the trade of making hats--hence the "Mad Hatter" of Alice in Wonderland fame. Perhaps the most perfidious accusation against the use of this chemical, however, is in vaccines. Mercury has been implicated for years as the cause of autism spectrum cases in children. Conversely there are those who pooh-pooh this idea, despite all the evidence. Would they prefer to align themselves with doctors who, back in the fifties, simply attributed autism to incompetence by "cold mothers"? Or a certain so-called comedian who recently declared that autistic kids are merely brats? In that case, why is there a correlation between removal of mercury from some children's vaccines in 1999 and a drop--by up to 35 per cent--in the cases of autism after the fact? There are some state governments that have banned the use of Thimerosal in vaccines, such as Iowa and California, due to the marked increase in cases of autism they have experienced. Overall, as many PSAs have informed us numerous times, the rate of autism is one in every one hundred and fifty births. At one time this disorder was actually considered "rare". If there is no link to mercury, then what is the reason for such a phenomenal increase? Despite the removal of Thimerosal from certain children's vaccines, it is still part of many others, including influenza. Now, with H1N1, aka Swine Flu, being considered a potential threat, parents are being urged to have their children vaccinated. With this controversial substance added to the equally-controversial flu vaccine issue, the potential is brewing for even more problems. This particular flu vaccine is going to be administered under pressure, is not necessarily going to be adequately tested, and therefore is, itself, raising red flags galore. How many people recall the Swine Flu epidemic of the seventies, with people contracting Guillain-Barre Syndrome after receiving the vaccine? Will this occur again, or will the risk of more disaster be dealt with in advance this time? Below are links to sites--including a very interesting YouTube video by Robert Kennedy Jr.--concerning the mercury-autism issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrIM2hwrLoc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh-nkD5LSIg&feature=related http://www.jpands.org/vol11no1/geier.pdf http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/38784.php After viewing these videos and reading the PDF article (Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, from March 10, 2006), make up your own mind. We're still all free to do so.
