A scientist is something I have wanted to be my whole life.  One supervisor I worked with in the cancer research laboratory insisted you could not be a scientist without a PhD.  I always knew she was wrong, or at least had hoped so, since I knew I would not be getting such an advanced degree.  Well now my business cards (from a global biotechnology GIANT) say I *AM* a scientist, but that isn't what matters, either.  My dedication to learning and loving science is what makes me a scientist.  I believe anyone can be a scientist, even without formal education in the subject.  I have always been a firm believer in self-education, and this blog is my attmept to help you enjoy a start in science self-education..

We keep a special term, research scientist, for those scientists who work in their laboratories on new discoveries.  This is something I am not (currently), but that could be a status that changes in the future!

According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of scientist is:

  • Main Entry: sci·en·tist
  • Pronunciation: \ˈsī-ən-tist\
  • Function: noun
  • Etymology: Latin scientia
  • Date: 1834

1 : a person learned in science and especially natural science : a scientific investigator

And so, of course, you wonder, where is the quiz?  Below, I challenge you to select the pictures of the scientists.  I used some people that I have talked about before, and have been in the news or popular TV, so I don't think it will be very hard. There is a scientist in each group of pictures.  My point in doing this is to show scientists are not always what you expect!  There may be scientist parents in your kid's classrooms. The person in front of you at the grocery store could be a scientist.  Does it matter?  Probablly not, unless you remember science is everywhere and the numbers of people that love science, work in science and teach science are growing everyday!
