Last week a wonderful woman passed away. I was lucky enough to get to know her in junior high school when she was my Sunday School teacher. Her name was Eva Spears. She was 92 years old. She blessed a lot of people in her time. Although I can't say near enough about this woman to serve as a reasonable memorial, I feel as though I need to say how she touched my life.
Eva loved everyone. Every time I saw her, even when she was in a hospital bed, she told me she loved me and gave me a hug and kiss. While it did warm my heart to know she thought enough of me to do this, I know she probably did it with everyone. You could not know Eva without knowing that she loved you.
Eva always told people that they were precious to her. I don't think there is a soul on this earth that she did not consider precious. She said it so often, that she named her pet Shih Tzu Precious.
I remember many of the lessons from Eva's Sunday School class. There were just a few of us in the class. All the students were junior high girls. You know when an 80+ year old woman can get a group of junior high girls to enjoy their time learning about the Bible, she's something special.
One time in class, she was telling us about singing in church. She told us that it didn't matter if your voice was good or bad, if your heart felt it you should sing loud and proud. The man who sat in front of her (they were good friends) complained to her that she had an awful voice and sang too loud. She would just tell him to turn his hearing aid down!
Eva was a great woman with an amazing spirit. I am very proud to have had her as a role model. For selfish reasons, I am sad that she is gone. I really wish my kids could have gotten to know her. While I may shed a tear or two when she comes to mind, that feeling is quickly relieved by the joy of knowing how happy she is now. She is reunited with her husband who passed away in the early 1980s along with other family and friends. She is able to see the face of our Lord. She can move about with no pain.
Eva was a devoted Christian. I only pray that I can do her memory justice by being the best Christian I can be and showing how much I learned from her.
No matter who you are, you are precious!
