Rambling Thoughts...

...of the insanely happy...

This morning I walked into the school that I teach at, to a teachers lounge (and hallways and classrooms) abuzz of what the President has planned for the 8th.

By the 8 o'clock bell every teacher in that building, as well as the administrators and counselors had inboxes full of disgruntled parents.  The district has been bombarded with parents threatening to pull children from school for the day.

Now, it's not a shocker that we come from a more republican/independant area.  I am in Texas after all.  But, add to that the fact that this speech is occuring during a 4 day week, on the third week of school (for our state), and will be TAKING AWAY times for lessons and activities.  How exactly is this helping the students focus on education when he is taking away their time for education so they can listen to him?

Shouldn't this be something that can be done AFTER the school day?  Something that parents can decide if they want their children to watch or not? (not just up to the school?)  My own daughter is in Kindergarten at another school in the district and I was concerned at first that she may be bombarded with this.  Fortunately I received word that all schools in our district will NOT be viewing in.

I personally dislike the idea of students being "forced" to watch the president and being "forced" into lessons that are mandated to respond certain ways.  In my opinion the lessons (and I use that term VERY loosely) are not meant for student interaction and open-mindedness or questioning, but for young (malliable) minds to be asked "what can I do for this man?"

That is just scary.

I am SO happy that my school district and the majorty of school districts in my state will NOT be tuning in to this hogwash of a program.

YOU ROCK, TEACHER.  AND SO DOES YOUR DISTRICT!!  MY HUSBAND SAID, "RELAX, HE'S  GOT ENOUGH ROPE TO HANG HIMSELF WITH."

It's history.  I'm a die hard liberal, but I would never sit here and tell you that W's presidency wasn't history.  Every presidency is history in the making and I would have zero problem with my children watching an address made by the president in school, no matter the president or political party.  It's current events.  People are being ridiculous about the entire thing IMO.

I don't see a problem with it either. This is history. The president is not pushing political views. From what I understand, he is going to be focusing on talking to students about the importance of staying in school and getting an education. Our economy is in so much turmoil, and it is going to take educated people to get us out of it. Personally, if my kids were in public school, which they aren't, I would talk to my kids ahead of time, and have them listen to the speech. If it were Kennedy, this would not be an issue....this is really sad to me. JMO, of course....
