I haven’t bestowed that title on anyone in my life for so many years. In fact, I haven’t had a best friend since high school.

How do you define a best friend? For me it is someone who is always there…steady & constant. Who doesn’t bail. Who forgives you when you screw up. Who lets you blather on endlessly about your problems when you’re stressed. Who debates the same situation with you AGAIN to help put your mind at ease. Who knows friendship is a two-way street. Who knows you’re not perfect. Who confides in you. Who turns to you for advice & gives it freely. Someone you can trust. Someone you respect. Someone who at least tries to understand. They ask about how YOU are doing. They know what’s going on with you. They actually care.

I had a bit of an epiphany this week. I realized that I do indeed have a best friend. Her name is Ania & she is my sister. Don’t get me wrong- my husband is my soul mate, but my sister? well, she’s my best friend!  We talk constantly & about everything. In some ways she knows me better than my husband. Really, she helps keep him sane since I can talk to her endlessly about my “problems”, where a “normal” man would be tired of it after hearing it the first time around, lol! A great example is when I was separating from my parents & dwelling on it (at the time I was not 100% certain I was doing the right thing) & subsequently talking about it all the time. My hubby was only able to be practical & that was fine & great & necessary (he grew tired of hearing me go on about my situation with my parents “yet again” very quickly & rightly so). But what I needed was someone to talk to ad nauseam about the situation as I learned to accept my new reality.  My sister was that someone. My sister is that someone. I love her so deeply & am very, very grateful to have her in my life.

It’s just funny that I’ve been “missing” a best friend for so many years…but in reality she was right by my side the whole time! Such a great example of not seeing what is right in front of you because you are looking too hard.
