I haven't watched the show in years, but it had a huge impact on me as a child.  It is sad to see the show cancelled after so many years :-(

It is???? That's so sad. The Reading Rainbow theme song was the only song my husband could think of to sing to our daughter when she was born. A few years ago, Lavar Burton gave the commencement speech at USC, and the students spontaneously burst out in song, singing the Reading Rainbow theme song. I so wish that I could have seen that! Can you imagine? The entire graduating class singing together.

The key word here is 'used to'- maybe there just isn't enough watchers any more.  Hope reading is still being taught! Seems like Tv & computers have taken over the world.

Good bye Reading Rainbow, & thank you!

It is a great show.  I discovered it when my older daughter was too old to appreciate it, but my younger daughter wasn't quite ready for it.  It looks like I've lost that chance.  How sad.

The geek in me is so very sad.    I watched it relgiously as a kid.    My absolute favorite epidosde was the reading of "Kapiti Plain" read by James Earl Jones.   It had such an impact on me that as an adult I pounced on the book when i happened to see it in the bookstore.  Mine!

I have fond memories of watching the show growing up and I'm saddened that our son won't have the chance to love it as much as I did. According to NPR's coverage of the story, it seems that the show is as much a victim of the financial times (funds couldn't be found to renew the broadcasting rights) as it is of a shift in educational philosophy (more emphasis phonics and spelling and the basic tools of literacy). I just hope Sesame Street never meets the same fate.
