While I don't agree with EVERYTHING he says, I loved his speech about Education. It's an excellent speech! He's asking kids to be responsible for their own education and that they're not going to be able to become what they want unless they have one! Isn't that what we, as parents, want for our kids anyway? Why not let the President chime in too? As much as I love my parents and grandparents, their lessons only REALLY sank in if they came from a third party (a friend's parent, for example). After coming from a generation that mostly just expects things (sense of entitlement, I believe it's called), I find this refreshing that the President (and parents and teachers) are actually expecting you to WORK for your education. I'll be printing this speech out so my son (who is only 6) can go back and read it when he gets older.
When I was in school, I hardly ever did any work and got bad grades and had to go to a continuation High School just to get my diploma. You have no idea how much I wish I could just go back and actually TRY. I missed my chance for a quality education because no one really expected it of me. They just passed me off as the next teacher's problem. I blame myself though. I didn't really expect much of myself and I did have a sense of entitlement. I want to be a writer, but I don't have the foundation that English class could have given me. I love History, but I didn't pay attention in class so now I have to google Henry the 8th so I can learn about why he had 6 wives (instead of just watching the Tudors and hoping that it'll be historically acurate). I REALLY wish I had payed attention in Math and Science class so I might be able to help my son with his homework later on down the road.
I never really understood that saying "Hind-sight is 20/20." I do now. So I whole-heartedly support the President's expectation that a student shouldn't just rely on the teachers or the parents to be responsible for his or her education. But for that student to take an active role!
(PS..please no bashing as this is MY blog and you didn't have to read it...)

I thought it was a wonderful speach, and I don't get what everybody was so bent about. Ummm, they don't AGREE that learning is good? They WANT their kids to be ignorant? Please explain, because I'm scratching my head on this one.
