Is it any wonder obesity rates are climbing? Check out these facts from Dr. Jamie McManus' book on Healthy Kids. You can obtain the entire book FREE by request on www.nosickvisits.com.

Did You Know?

• Children eat nearly twice as many calories(770) at restaurants as they do during a meal at home (420).

• According to a national study, 92% of elementary schools do not provide daily physical education classes for all students throughout the entire school year.

• The typical American child spends about 44.5 hours per week using media outside of school.

• At least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week is the recommended minimum. However, nearly 23 percent of children and nearly 40 percent of adults get no free-time physical activity at all.

• Studies have shown that, between 1977 and 1996, portion sizes and corresponding calories per serving grew markedly in the United States.

One study of portion sizes for typical items showed that:

• Salty snacks increased from 132 calories to 225 calories.
• Soft drinks increased from 144 calories to 193 calories.
• French fries increased from 188 calories to 256 calories.
• Hamburgers increased from 389 calories to 486 calories.

I am all for children getting outside and playing.  Some kids though, no matter how much exercise they get they will still be over weight.j  As a kid I did sports all year around and I was still over weight.  My kids are actually on the skinny side and they can eat any and everything and they don't gain an ounce.

Ugh.  The kid's meals now are as big or bigger than the "adult" meals of my childhood.

My DH and I usually split a meal when we go out.  We ordered a burrito at a Mexican restaurant that was SO big, that even with us splitting it we couldn't finish it.  Seriously, it would have served our entire family if the kids had been with us.

The plates they use in restaurants now are the size of serving platters.  Silverware has even gotten bigger.  You look at antique china and silver, and the plates, cups, bowls and spoons were much smaller than they are now.  Everything, including oversized furniture, is encouraging us to get fatter and fatter.   It's rather pathetic.

I know! How disgusting is it? And the worst thing is, that most obese people just get snotty and "offended" when others mention ANYTHING about obesity. Look, I watch what me and my family eat. i cook healthy. yep twice a month dd and I go out to eat to celebrate more time passing till dh comes home again. But I get her the healthiest food on the menu.

My mom weeighed over 200 lbs for over twenty years. She blamed it on a glandular problem the whole time. Then she started eating healthy and exercising. Lo and behold she is now 125 and 5'3". Hmmm, glandular?

So many ppl take shortcuts and pass blame and use excuses. nothing excuses you from taking care of your body and teaching your family to take care of theirs. Stop whining, put down the Big Mac, get on the treadmill, and suck it up.
