You wanna know what really grinds my gears? (Yup, I borrowed that line from the Family Guy).

People who park in the handicapped spaces who aren't handicapped.  From what I've seen, they're either freaking lazy, super obese or both!

handicapped parking space

Granted, it really shouldn't bother me as it doesn't pertain to me in any way, shape or form- but it does, because when I see an older person or a person with a real disability who has to park all the way in the back- because some douchebag doesn't have the energy to walk those couple of extra feet, it really pisses me off.  And I'll be the first to walk by them with a rude remark about their laziness.  I mean, honestly-if you're 'that person' you really need to get a clue.  Ugh! I hate stupid selfish people.

Another thing that chaps my arse, is morbidly obese people who get granted these handicapped signs.  I mean, what the hell?  Why are they granting them the right to walk less, when in reality- they should be walking more.  Not to sound insensitive or anything, but come on!

If  that's a reason to grant someone less walking distance, shouldn't mother's with more than one child be granted one of these 'handicapped signs' aswell?  Not to say that they're really handicapped, but have you ever seen a mom of more than one (at times, even one) trying to get her kids who are impatient, fussy and throwing tantrums, into a store?  They're at a disadvantage!

So should that be considered a disability?  Yup, sounds nice, but don't hold your breath ladies :)

There are those that "look" fine, but in reailty are physically disabled. Yes, they can walk and talk.

But due to certain disabilities, such as Systematic Lupus, which my Mother-In-Law has, it can be terribly hard for her to walk long distances. And yes, she utilizes a Handicapped Parking Spot, with her little sticker that hangs in the window.

At times, she has to sit down for a moment to "catch her breath" and let the pain subside.

When I was small, I had one myself. I had to have specialized equipment for "outings" with my parents from the hospital. So, they had to have the equipment near enough that if I needed it, they didn't have to run clear across the parking lot.

An elderly lady called the police on my parents during one such outting when I was small. Said that I didn't "look" handicapped "enough" to need the space.

The cops came in to the store, confronted my parents, then had seen the wires on my monitors and my trach in my throat. My father took the officer and the lady out to the car and had them peek in the backseat of the car. Lo and behold, there was the rest of my equipment on the floor board.

The lady felt SO bad. She didn't think, due to the fact that I didn't "look" that bad, that I was in "need" of a handicapped space.

We never know the person's life when they pull in to a handicapped space. They may not look like they need that spot to you (general use, not aimed to anyone specific), but there is a reason for them being able to have a legal handicapped sticker.

The spaces are not limited to those that are blind or in a wheelchair.

My mother hassevere asthma, it is not something you can see, she looks like a normal woman of 51. Her doctor and the state she lives in says she deserves a handicap plate. You cant always see the handicap so I don't judge when there isn't an obvious reason for them parking there.

I'm sorry, but you can kinda tell when someone doesn't need the parking spot.  When it's a person who is perfectly fine and I say that, because yesterday I saw a young dude park in the handicapped spot who ran into the store.  He didn't look like he was in pain and he didn't look like he had tubes anywhere.

My brother's friend uses his dad's who has M.S.  Which is what I'm talking about.  Why doesn't he save that spot for someone who really DOES need it?  He should know better as his dad is one of them.  It's pathetic.

pr0udm0m_0f_3   and   3_ring_circus said what I wanted to........Just want to add....some of those 'lazy obese' people are obese due to medications they are on or diseases they have......you  don't know what a person is suffering from just by looking at them.

Beckie, exactly. My mom was obese. But not from eating junk food and sitting on her butt all day long. She had a Thyroid problem that caused the weight gain. In turn, that made more health complications. She was trying for YEARS to shed the weight off.

Yes, there ARE those that abuse that parking space. They DO break the law. Especially those that park there and have NO PROOF what-so-ever of LEGALLY needing it.

That being said, don't judge a book by it's cover. Not all disabled people "wear" their handicaps on the outside.

My Mother In-Law doesn't. You can't tell just by looking at her. But, once you see her look of pain from just walking from the car to the store front doors, then you get a better understanding. Not to mention how out of breath she can at times get just from that short distance of a walk.

People are obese for different reasons.  I get that.  No matter from what it is, walking helps.  My mother used to be really overweight until she started walking.  Sure, she'd get out of breath, but walking is always good!!  I'm not asking people to run to the freaking door- all I'm saying is that walking will never hurt anyone who is overweight.. if anything, it helps.

I don't know whether it's cause I live in Las Vegas and people are shady as it is, but screw that.  You ladies keep talking about parents and stuff like that, that have a disability, which is fine.  I'm talking about young adults who use their parents signs just cause they're lazy.

I do agree with you on that. And there are PLENTY of them that do that. I myself have seen it.

But not EVERYONE who parks there and "looks healthy" (young or old) are. They just don't show it on the outside.

Also, my mom would walk ALL of the time. But it wasn't her eating or excersise habit that kept the weight on, it was that damned thyroid problem.

I never said that EVERYONE was guilty of doing this.

And I know, thyroid problems suck.  But it shouldn't be a reason to park closer and not walk.  Whats a couple of extra feet, when the exercise will do ya good?

So it's a win/win situation.
