One form of charity (type of tithes) that is obligatory for Muslims is at the conclusion of Ramadan.

Every Muslim is required to pay Zakat-ul-Fitr at the conclusion of the month of Ramadan as a token of thankfulness to God for having enabled him to observe fasts.

One of the main purpose of Zakat al-Fitr is to provide those who fasted with the means of making up for any errors during the month of fasting. Zakat al-Fitr also gives the poor the  means to celebrate the festival of breaking the fast (Eid al-Fitr) along with the rest of the Muslims.

Zakat-ul-Fitr is part of the fast of Ramadan and is characterized by the following elements:

  • It must be given before Eid prayers, unless one has a valid reason for a delay.

  • It should be given on behalf of every member of the household, whether male or female, adult or minor.

The amouint is to be on sa' (four double handfuls) of food (basics like rice, grains, etc) per person.

Many give a set amount established around $7-$10 per person and then food is bought and distributed to the needy.

This was my first time paying it (didn't know about this last year) and I took rice and beans in the amount of 5 sa' (1 for me and 4 for my boys)

AA I have seen a lot of different explanations about how much a sa' is. This is what I read and heard: 4.4 pounds, 5 pounds, 2 double handfuls and 4 double handfuls.

I went with the 4 double handfuls and 4.4 pounds.

Allah knows best :)
