ALG's Journal

You will be assimilated...

Baby Alyssa Katrina arrived this morning at 40wks 5days at 7:23  AM quite unexpectedly and intensely.  She weighs 8lbs, 20in, 13.5 inch head and was born with a fist in her eye and a very short but healthy cord.

Note:   At some point I'm going to add more to this journal as I remember details.  I've got video I will watch...when husband isn't around.   He doesn't like the bitchy primal roaring birthing woman...LOL...he misses his wife.   Poor guy.  He's been a trooper though...and I will dedicate a separate journal to his awesomeness.      My midwife also has detailed notes that I will eventually get a copy of.  There won't be any silly numbers about dilation because I didn't want or have any useless progress checks, but I know my time line is a bit skewed -- things went even faster than I though -- so it will be nice to adjust the timeline.

Update:  http://www.cafemom.com/journals/read/1532593/Reflections_of_Alyssa_s_Birth_on_My_Birthday

After an uneventful day of nothing in particular except a small dab of bloody show hardly worth mentioning, the usual painless braxton hicks, and the strangest cervical feeling of "period coming, I had a dinner of pizza.           I didn't feel quite right, but figured it was just another round of protein overload intestinal cramps and pooping.

At 12:00 midnight I went upstairs to go to bed, but had cramps that made me decide to watch some TV and wait for the anal explosion.      I wasn't dissapointed.     I made a mad dash for the facilities downstairs and stayed glued to the toilet for 2 hours.    I took a hot shower and felt better.

At 2am, the cramps weren't going away.  I wasn't sure if they were labor because...well..they felt the same as intestinal cramps!    II woke my husband to get the birth ball and i sat on it for a while, then took a warm bath for a while and that felt nice, and when he came back downstairs after a short while, I had my ass in the air...humping a pillow and the couch -- and moaning.    I was cranky, snappy, and was tired of his logical questions (such as:  Honey, should I call the midwife?).       He called the midwife and she immediately called the two assistants who I didn't even know showed up (here is where the time warp happens...she didn't arrive until 4:30am and THEN called the assistants to hurry!).

Labor was intense and active from the get go.    I had no work up to it at all!   I couldn't stop pooping either!     I was VERY vocal, grunting, roaring, and animalistic which is not like me at all being the quiet book worm.   I talked to myself a lot, LOL.  (I was on the floor at this point, My husband had brought up a futon matress and layed it on the living room floor and covered it with my homemade cloth underpads and a sheet.  I had every pillow in the house piled up like a big moutainous nest that I hugged and humped)   I was on my hands and knees, or a semi frog squat, or in a one knee down one leg bent supported squat (my husband held me up what a trooper despite the clawing of his shoulder, almost getting bitten, and almost throwing his back out twice).       I layed on my side for three contractions and broke down! (My midwife kept trying to encourage me to lie on my side even though every instinct I had was against it...my body knew it was a bad idea...it is the reason why I couldn't stay in my tub where I thought I wanted to be.  During a lull I tried it and I regret giving in.)  That was a NO WAY, I told everone to %uck off...without actually saying %uck...as I was too busy working on getting focus back.   (Had I not been educated on labor positions and had been in the hospital in the traditional lithotomy position I would have been coerced into an epidural because my body screamed out in so many way NOT to lay down.)

I was very vocal and adamant about when a doppler was okay and when it wasn't -- essential I was a primal #itch.   (in retrospect, there were too many interruptions asking me to allow a doppler check.  Next time I will definitely be very specific about how many and when before hand.  The questions made me lose my focus and took me out of my animal brain where I hardly noticed anything and into my logical brain.)   I check myself for head progress though I asked for one check because I didn't know if I was feeling was a head and I wanted to know what it was so I could do it myself.    I let the midwife in there for literally 5 seconds :)  "Is that a head I am feeling?"   "Yes."   "Good, GET OUT."   LOL

The contractions weren't what hurt really, those were fine.   My body was pushing by the time he midwife got here.    What was really painful was the extreme rectal pressure.   It was constant and there was nothing that gave me relief not even crowning after a certain point (it burned and I was streched to the limit -- I would have put my legs together to help with the stretch but I just couldn't do it (this was partly because the midwives kept distracting me).   We didn't realize until later that the pressure was partly due to her fist being up near her eye that made it extra painful  (the descent was painful not the contractions...and the pain was not like a smash-your-toe-with-a-hammer pain, it was more a working pain more like over-exercising)  and a long active labor.       She was almost all the way out and the midwife was concerned that she wasn't budging for a minute.    Had I been able I would have kicked them in the head for helping get her.   I bitched them all out.

Even though I had my finger in checking progress of crowning and supported my own clitoris (funny how the head feels so huge but when you look at it it isn't really).     She turned on her own and slithered out so fast I didn't even get to enjoy the relief!    She came out with a lungfull of protest!  I can't blame her.   She had a lot of vernix and still some lanugo on her shoulders.   Her cord was quite short, but she pinked up fast.   The placenta came out about half an hour later and gross and fascinating.  My husband declined the inspection.  LOL         I had one small tear that I declined to have stitched and a couple of skid marks.    Those don't really hurt though, what pains me is my anus and rectum.  It makes it hard to walk.

Our cats were quite well behaved and kept a respectable distance but were there watching me.    I didn't labor in our tub, but I did what I wanted and am so happy that we stayed home.    Being in control and the master of my self and labor is something I wouldn't trade for anything.  I had to put my foot down a few times, but that wasn't often and the support was well worth it.

My bleeding is minimal and my uterus is already down past my navel -- which surprised the midwives.     The baby nurses like a hoover and I still don't have latch quite right.   She's got my eyebrows, my fingers, and daddies freaky monkey toes.

Congrats!  It is amazing how mean you can be.  My husband told me I was RUDE for telling the midwife straight up, "NO," when she told me to look at her one time.

You'll get the latch.  Remember little Alyssa is learning how to do it too. :)  (So many girl Parrots!)

I can't wait for pictures!

I have a niece named Alyssa.

That's kind of what my labor was like with Ryan ... and it started on Easter Sunday and was 4 AM Tuesday morning before we got any real action going.  Congrats on the spawn!!  When do we eat her?

Wait...we're only supposed to discuss that in the group, right?  Whoops, sorry.
