Alirght moms, what does my son need to know before he goes into Kindergarten next year? I'm very concerned bc I think he might be AD/HD. We've filled out paper work and all to get him tested, just waiting to hear something back. But I need to know what he needs to know. Thanks!!!!

Hey Sweetie!  It varies by state and even school distirict.  October has to know some basic math, some writing, some reading, she has  to be able to tell her favorite story without looking at the book, colors, shapes, opposites, etc...basically they have  to know what we all learned in kindergarten to get INTO kindergarten in my area.  The good thing is most states do not require kindergaten until the child is 6 (6-16 are the required school ages) Others are not until 8 (8-18) Very few are 5-15.

Does he like computer games?  October has learned all of her letters, most of her numbers and also some very basicl reading (she sounded out 'bubbles' by herself the otehr day) with a website a friend told us about. Let me know if you want to know it and I'll get it for you.  I would post now but it is on Eric's firefox bookmarks not mine LOL  It is 100% free so no worries there!  =-)

Gavin started Kindergarten this yr. We taught him his Letters (writing, recognizing, and the sound). We taught numbers 1-20 but was able to reach 50. How to spell his first name. How use scissors. cut a straight line, and diff shapes, oh and learn shapes, colors. things that are the same vs diff. We got the workbooks from our local bookstore or wlagreens/cvs type stores. Our school district offered a pre kindergarten screening when Gavin was 4 and that was to check and make sure that his attention and learning were on the right track.  We had lots of fun with it all and kept it light. He does very well in his class now. Hope this helps.

It depends on your state, and you can usually look up the kindergarten requirments for your area on line.  Basic stuff is always good. Shapes, colors, letters, numbers, name identification, basic writing skills, ability to answer questions.  It isn't just a matter of what you know either, its also a matter of being emotionally and socially ready.
