Well when I went to pick Jerry up from school on Monday, his teacher and the classroom aid were nearly jumping up and down with excitement! They said "Oh just wait till you hear what happened today!" I was almost afraid lol. ;) But they said that Jerry actually said his name, in a whisper: twice! They said the first time was very clear. He was looking in a mirror and they were whispering it into his ear and never expected him to say it..but then he did! It was later in the afternoon that they heard him say it again, but not so clearly this time, and again in a whisper. Yay Jerry!..I think?
Well we have tried relentlessly to get him to say his name since then. But he's not even shaping his mouth as if he wants to. Ugh! If you can say your name then just say it again!! Preeettty pleeease? Lol. I don't want to say that I don't believe them, but this is a child who has never spoken a word and it is hard to imagine that he would do it and then *nothing*..
So frustrated and excited at the same time! Any thoughts??

WOW! HOW EXCITING!!!!!
I have found that sometimes words come easier when there isn't any pressure. He did it in a 'fun' environment with mirror feedback the first time. So, try to be casual about it at home. Make it fun and don't let him feel your excitement or anxiety. The more relaxed he is, the easier the words will come. Also try some singing - it connects with the brain in a different way and it helps connect to speech.
It is possible! I'm sure he did say it and I'm even more sure that he will say it again when you least expect him to. Maybe he's just like Mark and you have to make him think it was his idea to say it, lol. =0) Go Jerry!!
That's wonderful news. I'm sure he will give you a repeat performance when he's good and ready. God bless you and your son!
That is awesome! choose to believe. He may say it again. Willy does that a lot. Over christmas break he said our last name and it came out as a whisper. And we can't get him to repeat it since. There are a lot of times willy has said something at school but not at home. And visa versa.

Choose to believe them... And KNOW that it will come again! When Elijah said his first word, (post seizures), he was about 3yrs old, and it was "More" (which he could sign, but he SAID it, ("Mo") like 3 times in one day... And then NOTHING for I think like a week, maybe two... Then he suddenly started saying it every time he signed it, (almost). It is SUCH slow progress with our kids, but I'm SURE if he said it twice, he will say it again. My old SLP told me that sometimes when they say a word for the first time, they get excited and try again, then they kind of scare themselves, and it takes a while. I think that's really normal... Well, our version of normal... lol
I'm SO SO HAPPY for you guys!! I can't wait to see the journal about the first time you hear it!!!! (crossing my fingers that it comes soon!)
I remember after that, "Mo" doubting myself so badly after a few days of not hearing it again, and nobody else had heard, so I felt really stupid, like maybe I was crazy... But it WAS the start of him talking.
I HOPE HOPE HOPE the same is true for your little man! *GREAT BIG HUGS*
