Why breast cancer is usually found near the armpit?

Some time ago, I attended a Breast Cancer Awareness seminar and I asked why the most common area for Breast Cancer was near the armpit.
My question could not be answered at that time.
This e-mail was just sent to me, and I find it interesting that my question has been answered. I challenge you all to rethink your every day use of a product that could ultimately lead to a  terminal illness.  As of today, I will change my use.
I showed it to another friend going through chemotherapy & she said she learned this fact in a support group recently..
The leading cause of breast cancer is the use of anti-perspirant.
*What ???*
*Yes,*  *ANTI-PERSPIRANT*.
Most of the products out there are an anti-perspirant /deodorant combination, so go home and check
Deodorant is fine, anti-perspirant is not!
Here's why :- The human body has a few areas that it uses to purge toxins ; behind the knees, behind the ears, groin area, and armpits. The toxins are purged in the form of perspiration.
Anti-perspirant, as the name clearly indicates, prevents you from perspiring, thereby inhibiting the body from purging toxins from below the armpits.

These toxins do not just magically disappear. Instead, the body deposits them in the lymph nodes below the arms since it cannot sweat them out.
Nearly all breast cancer tumors occur in the upper outside quadrant of the breast area. This is precisely where the lymph nodes are located.
Additionally, men are less likely (but not completely exempt) to develop breast cancer prompted by  anti- perspirant usage because most of the anti-perspirant product is caught in their hair and is not directly applied
to the skin.
Women who apply anti-perspirant right after shaving
increase the risk further because shaving causes almost imperceptible nicks in the skin which give the chemicals entrance into the body from the armpit area.
PLEASE pass this along to anyone you care about.
Breast cancer is becoming frighteningly common.
This awareness may save lives.

Oh wow. I was actually worried this might be some scare tactic (Chuck E Cheese ball pits, anyone?) so I looked it up on snopes. It has an undetermined rating there, which means it's not necessarily false. And after doing a bit more research of my own, I find it pretty conclusive that this could be true.

Next time I buy deodorant, I'm for sure getting non-anti-perspirant.

Thanks for the tip!

This one has been debunked many times... just like the bra causes cancer of the breast story. If your armpit sweat glands are *blocked* the sweat merely leaves your body via another avenue- like your feet, face etc... Sunscreen blocks my perspiration- does that mean I will get  skin cancer?? From using sunblock??? It is an urban legend.

I agree with the above.  The first thing tht came to mind is that toxins don't accumulate in lymph nodes.  They accumulate in the liver ad kidneys.  *If* they did accumulate in the lymph nodes, we would expect to see lymphomas result from that, not breast cancer.  Breast cells and lymph node cells are very different, and if a lymph node did original the cancer, it would be called a lymphoma based on the original tissue type.

I went looking for an official document on this and found this:

http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/risk/ap-deo

Please let me know if you have questions.  It's nice of you to try to help other, but I don't think this one is true!

I can't use just deoderant :(

I have a chronic persisting sweat issue (self-diagnosed, of course lmao) and if I just use deoderant, I'll be absolutely disgusting. I've tried every single kind of anti perspirant and deoderant, including just baby powder and those natural crystal stone things. Nothing has worked, even under the absolute best conditions. So I just gave up and started using whatever I wanted again. Even the frickin clinical deoderant doesn't help me. I'm too poor to afford electrolysis. BLAH!

hmmm. Science Spot

after reading that link you provided i dont see why you would think that it isn't true. It looks like to me that they dont know.

Better to be safe then sorry.

True or not this post did what it is suposed to do, raise awareness and get women thinking and doing research. That in itself can save lives.

My real concern about this is that is obviously a chain email that has been posted first hand, it is even verbatim in most places from the message on the snopes website. That makes it a bit misleading as the claims in the message aren't backed up by any links  or verification from outside sources.

I personally  am on the wall with this one. I have heard both for and against. The for articles tend to be more like this one, a friend of a friend, someone told me, or I have read and I believe this. While the against tend to be more  people with a science and medical background saying "probably not".  (I would include Sunmoonstars in that category) Anti-perspirant has been under study for sometime now and has been linked to other conditions as well. Again whether that link is proven solid depends on who is interpreting the data.

In any case we need to all be aware of the chemicals we use in,on and around our bodies. That is just common sense.

Thank you for encouraging awareness.

I think that outstandinglove must not have understood what sciencespot was saying. It's very simple: if a cancer begins in the lymph nodes, then it is called a lymphoma. If it starts in the breast cells, then it is breast cancer. Breast cancer cannot start anywhere other than the breast.

In addition, the premise of this is that toxins build up in the lymph nodes, but sciencespot points out that this is an anatomical impossibilty.

I'm all for breast cancer awareness. The probelm with things like this is that it distracts people from focusing on the real things that we can do.

This is really what I was trying to say- too tired and afraid I may have come across as slightly grumpy LOL...

I am very organic and green and am all about avoiding chemicals wherever possible (Doubt me ??- read how I/we lived with large red Army ants for over three years partly due to my resistance to the use of chemicals-in a journal I wrote last month...)

I just also believe in actual science vs rumor. Just wanted to dispell this one cuz it was and still is my understanding that there really is no science to back this one up...

thanks for the link, Tonya (science spot).  The article in the link points out the concern about aluminum, which is suspected to cause other health issues (dementia, I think?).  I've recently switched to the "Cotton-Tech" antiperspirant product under the Adidas brand name, which doesn't contain aluminum or parabens, and I like it.

I'm one who cannot go without antiperspirant, or no one would want to come anywhere near me... like caitxrawks.  I'm an Occupational Therapist (when I'm not at home being mommy), and my job requires being up extremely close & personal with my patients--can't be stinky!
