So I am making breakfast this morning...Yummy pancakes! After I take them off of the stove and cut them up in bite size pieces for the boys...I go off to retrieve the syrup. Ughhh! No such luck...it's all gone!
Immediately my brain goes into 'Mommy Mode'..and I start thinking of alternative choices. After rummaging through the fridge I find several good options. Peach Preserves? I grab my reading glasses to check out the label (could they make that print any smaller!? LOL) Nope! ..this has corn syrup in it. I toss it in the trash and continue my treasure hunt. Ah ha...Apple Butter! Nope! It has red dye #40. The Apple Butter finds itself next to the preserves in the can! LOL Since the fridge has been so stingy in offering up it's treasures...I move onto the pantry.
Viola....The answer to every prayer....CHOCOLATE!
Melting a bit of this gift...I drizzle it over the pancakes ...and hear squeals of delight from two very anxious boys! Oh good...no complaints and whining about breakfast today! yea!!!
Since I am already in the kitchen and doing dishes...I decide to 'multi-task' and make supper. Brazed Crock Pot Pork Chops! yum!
I didn't realize that both burners were hot until it was too late.....The nasty smell of burnt plastic made my stomach turn. I had placed the pork chop wrapper on the burner! What a mess....plastic melted all over the stove top.
To no one but myself, I say out loud..."Oh boy, that's not good" and I even manage a chuckle! LOL
Quickly grabbing a spatula I begin the task of scrapping the burner clean.
Then it happened...
Right there in my kitchen...
I had a revelation! A profound revelation! I have grown! I have grown up!
There was a time that this type of morning and it's trouble would have left me grumbling and grumpy...but now? I barely even notice! LOL
What miracle has taken place to cause this transformation?
Children.....Parenting Special needs children especially! LOL
I remain simply amazed at the countless ways that my special needs kids have helped ME!
I have needed to become organized and on a schedule! Me?! LOL
My tolerance for noise and constant activity has placed me at the top of the list for a future career as an air traffic controller. Juggling activities and giving out multiple orders at once has become my specialty! LOL Some call it mult-tasking...I call it 'survival'! LOL
Patience! Dare I even mention the word! LOL Master Yoga instructors envy my great ability of deep breathing! LOL
I have developed a wonderful sense of empathy for others. I have always been compassionate, at least I hope so, but now...I truly understand!
And my wit? If you haven't noticed it my now...I am a failure! LOL My comedy act has been a God sent! LOL My boys are the source and inspiration for most of my fun each and every day. Sometimes it's a choice between laughter or tears....I prefer to chuckle! Not that there aren't times. oh boy...I do cry! And that is ok too!
I have learned to be easier on myself and others. We dont' have to be perfect to be worthy!
Problem solving and perseverance...Most Parent can attest to having these skills improve greatly after childbirth! LOL
My boys with special needs have made me a better person!
Soooo...don't feel sorry for me! If you do see me in the grocery store behind the boys who are screaming , running and jumping everywhere....Please give me a smile and a nod...but please...please..don't feel sorry for me! :)

Good post. I feel like this too a lot, but only since giving up the HFCS laden soda. Until I did that, I was that frazzled mom who would have screamed at the little frustrations.
that's terrific. And we love pancakes with melted chocolate. We're actually having apple slices with warm melted chocolate for dessert tonight :)
if that was me i would be taking my own temper tantrum. kudos to you. how did you get to that point where you didn't freak out. i really need help with that.
Sort-of the same thing happened to me last week. Had an early IEP (conference for children with disability). Son asked me to iron his shirt. Accidentally left iron on board where it melted the cover on to my new iron. Cooled iron somewhat, scrubbed melted material off iron and finished ironing the shirt. When to IEP, teachers still don't get it, what else is new?
Thank you for this journal. I needed to see that there is hope. especially after the week I had. I have 2 boys both ASD and a daughter ADHD. My husband also has ADHD. I try to remind myself that everyday is an adventure but when you get a call from the teacher saying your son had cut his hair and when he walks in the door he has his glasses that are mangled in his hand missing one of the lenses cause he threw it out the bus window it becomes a bit hard to chuckle. :-) Thanks again!
That is a lovely journal. It helps to stop and notice the small things in life.
