Hi Ladies!

I'm new to photography. I'm enrolled in a local college photography degree program.

I plan to specialize in maternity, birth, breastfeeding and newborn photography. I've done one free session. I have another maternity session coming up, it's not free but very "low cost".  I have another "low cost" maternity and newborn sessions in December.

I was thinking of way to get my name out there. I know some people hold free sessions. I was thinking of contacting the free standing the birth center I went to and put up an "ad" on their board in their office advertising a free one hour session with a 8X10 of their choice. I would actually do 40 mins of shooting and then during the remainder of the time discuss with them which photo they wanted, contact information, release form, ec . Then they could pick it up or I could send it to them. If they wanted any photos beyond the free photo (not required) then I would charge for those.

I figured I would just set it up at my home in my living room; I get a lot natural light in here! I would just set up for one day and schedule the appts one hour apart, starting from 10am and doing my last session at 4 or 5pm.

It would give me an opportunity to build my portfolio.

What are your thoughts?

Do you have a website where people can view pictures and order from there? Don't forget to watermark the pictures you put on your website so people won't just copy them from the web and print them themselves.

yes watermark your pictures. I have already been burned by that and it hurts!

It sounds like a good plan. :) You might want to get something like Zenfolio or something like that where you can have a website that prospective clients can see what you have done.
