I love taking pictures, particularly of my girls, but also of nature.  Autumn is an incredible time for photography!  In a couple weeks my Photo Documentary of Autumn in New York will be ready, but this year I got a bonus chance for autumn pictures.  Last weekend we made the trip to Maryland (near the West Virginia border) to visit my daughters' great-grandfather, which also gave me the chance to take some fabulous pictures during their (almost) peak season.  I hope you enjoy them.  This is part of my Autumn Science Series (check out some past posts).

Maple leaves are my favorite due to their shape and often striking colors.  This picture is my desktop wallpaper right now.

I also love how they land in the grass, especially the red ones.

A cropped version of this one below is being used as my journal posts header now :)  I think the green leaves are creeping myrtle.  This was taken along the road near our hotel.

It rained most of the time we were there.

Where we go in Maryland is in the Allegheny Mountains, as you can see in these pictures, taken on the border with West Virginia:

Some of the trees had color so intense they leaves looked like they were glowing.  It was spectacular!  The second one is currently being used as the background on my homepage and you can make it yours too by selecting it as your theme.

At least one of these pictures will be blown up super-sized and framed for in my living room.

This is something my father really loved.. always makes me think of him.. so thank you for that. I have changing leaves up around my house because they make me think of him. (he was a New Englander- but moved to CA w/ my mom and me in the 70s, he always missed the fall color)

Gah! Was this the autumn photo journal you warned me about?!! Darn you, Tonya, for taking such wonderful photos of nature in transition! Seriously, the foliage display is spectacular. (Thanks.)

Pictures like these are one of the only things that can make me wish that I didn't live in Northern California. I used to live in New England and the Midwest. I love fall. I miss it terribly when I think about it.
