Meri's Home and Garden

A Wannabe Super Crunchy Hippie Mamma

April 9, 2004 is a date we cannot easily forget in this house.  It's the date Ranger Daddy was shot by a sniper in Iraq and lost half a lung.

On April 9, 2004, a young (19 year old) Marine was also shot and killed in Iraq.

Both men were on their way to Fallujah.  RD has said ever since that the day changed him; that his near death motivated him to change his life - divorce his now ex, try to be a happier, more trusting individual, etc.

Three and a half years later, on December 19, 2007, our son was born.  His name?  Chance.  The Marine's name?  Chance.  Oh, and that young Marine enlisted just over the mountains in Clifton, CO.  Our Chance has had an affinity for the Marines since he was five months old.  Yeah, I had a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach when I learned about Chance Phelps.

If you haven't seen it yet, watch Taking Chance.  It's a true story, written by the Col. who took Chance Phelps home, and even though it's about a Marine and refers to Iraq, it's not a "war" movie.  It's not even a political movie.  It's just a story about family, community, and the ties that connect people across social/economic lines.
