So a few of you had seen my thought bubble the other day about my youngest son, Phoenix (3), and that his hearing test results he failed them. When he was a new born he failed the first test, they did it again the next day and once again he failed it. Two weeks later they did one more, which he passed. The other day they did a hearing test on him in his head start class. I got a note that he failed it in his left ear. I brought him to the Dr. and she tested him and he failed in both, the left one was much worse though. So were off to more testing again. First, they will do a more through exam of his ears and hearing. Then will will recommend that he go for a ABR (I think that's what they called it) test. The will sedate him and stimulate his brain waves and ears, ect. They will then be able to tell where his hearing loss is located. If in the outer ear he'll probably just need ear tubes for about a year due to fluid in his ears. If in the inner ear he'll need hearing aids and he has partial deafness. His pediatrician believes he's probably particle deaf because he's only had one ear infection his whole little life, if they have fluid in the ears he'd likely have alot of ear infections. Even when he was really sick and had to have his tonsils and adenoids removed he never got a ear infection so outer ear is unlikely. Still possible not unlikely. When they told em he failed it I really wasn't surprised honestly. I always told people how intelligant I thought he was but no one really believed me because he was behind in speech, you couldn't get his attention no matter how many times we called many times among other things. This explains so much.
Phoenix has been one thing after another, here's a quick catch up for those who don't know. I had a awful, puke for 9 months and more health problems type of pregnancy. Then I was induced at 36 weeks. Phoenix was born at 4:18 am on July 18th. He was blue and not breathing. This is him just a couple of seconds old.

After they revived him he was on oxygen for about a week and lights for jaundice.

The he wouldn't eat, well he was unable to suck hard enough to the food in and he was losing weight. He spent 2 weeks in all children's hospital and had to have a G-tube put inserted into is belly and fed him that way until he was about 10 months old. He was then able to do it on his own ;-) ! He has had a couple of other surgeries too.
Then there was the list of things they gave me the first few months that they thought he had. Cerebral palsy, mentally handicapped, G.I. problems, heart problems (he had a small hole in his heart but it healed up on it's own after a while), and quite a few other things.
Today he is a happy, mostly healthy, boy. He is behind in speech and some skills but he is great! they still have concerns about high functioning autism but he's doing very well regardless. He is walking, talking up a storm (even if only people close to him know what he's saying the point is he's communicating), and doing many things at age 3 they though he wouldn't be able to do when he was 20! So while I feel bad for him if he has some deafness in all honesty I'll be happy with it and I'll take it. While I hope he doesn't have it He's such a miracle that he's here and he's doing so awesome I really shouldn't complain I guess.

This is him now, see how great he looks?!!!? ;-)
