Dear Mr Bardwell, you seem to be under the impression that stating, "I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," actually means the rest of the country is nodding sagely with you and agreeing that blacks and whites produce blighted children who suffer at the hands of an unforgiving society. Perhaps in Louisiana, you have witnessed so much racism that you feel this philosophy is justified and you really aren't aware how revolting your words are. However, it doesn't change the fact that you are indeed, a racist man who is abusing your authority in a most disgusting manner.
You do not have the right to determine whether or not interracial couples should be married. It's not your call; it's not your place. The only people who agree with your statement are other racists. You are delusional if you think Americans back you up on this. Stating that, "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else" is such an offensive and derogatory bunch of horseshit that you single handedly thrust the entire South back to the 1940's.
If a couple of white supremacists came to you to be married and they are in the habit of naming their children crap like Adolf Hitler, Aryan Nation and Himmler, then yes that would be a great couple to block in marriage and kick right square in the ass. You can bet those kids will suffer at the hands of an unforgiving society. However, you still cannot do this. It's not your place, not your call, not your job.
People who claim they aren't bigots and then in the same sentence state something so blatantly prejudiced are simply embarrassing themselves, Your Honor. And you, sir, should feel a lot of shame.
Now, if a gay couple came to you and wanted to be married, and you refused to marry them because secretly you fantasize about what they do in the bedroom while you're standing in the front of the mirror in your wife's unmentionables--that's a call for therapy, but still not a justifiable excuse not to marry them. But I know, you'll pull some verse from the Bible out of your ass and deny them their marriage ceremony. You'll probably say, "They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else." regarding them too.
What it boils down to, sir, is that you are a disease. You are the face of racism at its most insidious, most entrenched form. I really hope you get knocked off your pedestal very soon. You have no business being in the justice system. You disgust us all.
Signed, Joye Austin

I am in an interracial marriage-yes, I don't like what he said-but he has a right to his opinion..If he feels like that-so be it-I'm kinda tired of folks being shamed for their opinions or beliefs-If we can accept folks thinking it okay to have multiple children out of wedlock, accepting less than even standard behavior from their children, systematic destruction of our belief system and general chaos in most areas of our lives-certainly a man who doesn't agree with interracial marriage can have his own little beliefs..He's ignorant..he has to live with it in life and he'll have to answer for it before his God..I know it isn't true-I love my husband and most of the interracial marriages I know of are very solid-and the children of these marriages are beautiful, smart and well adjusted...Racisim is truly subjective in this day and age..so if he has black folks to tea and breaks bread with them-surely that isn't the same as a white supremacist that would just as soon kill a man because he's black before he would even speak to him?
Yes MPmommy, it is okay for him to hold this opinion. The problem is he is using his judicial power to force his beliefs onto others. That is a big NO NO. If he continues this crap I hope they revoke his position.
That's not the point at all. He is certainly entitled to his opinions. However, it is ILLEGAL for him to refuse to marry interracial couples. You see?
The piles and piles of black friends comment really got me. They use HIS bathroom?? OMGosh !! Just "wow" how people think these days. Great journal Joye...
Excellent post Joye. I am afraid I was ignorant to the fact that it was illegal for him to refuse to marry them when I first read the story. I thought what an asshat but didn't really think much further into it. Thanks for enlightening me. :-)
Like I said about this already - the only piles in this situation are the ones on his ass from straining to pull a good 'I'm not a racist' argument out of it.
I voted POPULAR and your post was great! I despise that man and any others who talk of "mixing races", etc. How ignorant and mean-spirited.

I love how bigots precede their racist statements with, "I'm not a racist, but....". It makes it that much easier to swallow...NOT!!!
