OH what a day! Haha, I don't know why I find this hilarious but I do. I keep laughing when I think about it. So we have an electric stove. Every fire related stove incident I've experienced has been because the stove s gas, or the fire is in the pan caused by grease. Not today's experience!
Hubby comes home and doesn't have much time, asks what there is he can eat for lunch. I offer a quesadilla, because he loves them. Normally he makes his in the microwave but I know they taste better on the stove all nice and crispy. So I'm sitting there making a quesadilla and my pan started smoking abit. No biggy they do that alot if I have spilt food under the pan (happens alot). I just wave the spatula to clear the smoke. Never been a problem in the past. Well today was different. Apparently I had spilled some sesame oil last night and I didn't realize it was under the grill part. So when I waved the spatula it ignited a fire under my pan. Just this big WHOOSH sound, and I knew! FIRE FIRE I yell loudly but soft enough not to wake my dd I just put down to sleep. I guess I didn't think I needed to get everyone out. I tried lifting the pan off but that just made the flames grow. So dear hubby runs in pulls the pan off and bends over the fire and blows it out. I thought he was going to burn his face off. But it went out. I felt stupid. So I made hubby another quesadilla in the microwave and then saw the other one hadn't even singed, so he got two quesadillas. He laughed as he drove off back to school.
Lesson learned. Oil ignites whether in the pan or under the pan. Second lesson, never fan the smoke on a stove with a spatula, just turn the over head fan on.

ooo, hey that's a good idea! I just realized I don't know where our fire extinguisher is in this house. I should find one!
My mom did something similar to yours except that she pulled the pan off and placed it on the linoleum floor while she got something to put out the fire. Burned right through the floor!
