My daughter is dating the son of a pastor at a Church of God.  I have gone a few times to hear the Dad preach, and today his sermon was on people being comfortable in a rut.

I admit there have been a few times I have befriended people and have been very disappointed.  I had to learn that there are some people who do not want change or are afraid to make the leap to change.  There are people who just want someone to listen to them whine about their problems, but they refuse to do anything about the situation that causes their problems.  They are "comfortable" in their rut.  They're not going to change because they either don't have what it takes or they're too scared.

I realized this a few years ago and was shocked at the realization.  At first I just didn't understand.  Why would someone choose to keep living their life in a negative way?  I believe in helping people, but I want to help people who want to learn a better way, who want to help themselves and are willing to try.

I think one of the problems is that it is easier to stay in a negative lifestyle than to get used to something better "just in case" the bottom falls out and it all goes wrong again.  It's so sad that some people feel this way.  Life is short.  We have to grab whatever happiness we can and enjoy it.  We are not promised tomorrow.  It's just not worth it to me to stay in a bad situation, even if I might improve my life and still fall back into a bad situation again.  At least I could say I tried.  At least I could enjoy something positive if only for a short while, and if it lasts, all the better.

Don't give in to the rut, ladies.  You deserve better, but those of us trying to help can only help if you are willing to put forth the effort to help yourselves.

Good luck and God bless you all,

Shawnee
