 That little nip is in the air, heralding the return of fall weather. Time to visit pumpkin patches, rake leaves, and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa while reading out loud with your children!
As we move into the school year and begin to head inexorably towards the holiday season, it's a good time to think about educational goals. Never Too Young To Start Reading
 If you are a parent of a young child, you might wonder what you can do to prepare your child for reading. "Do I need flash cards? Do I need a special reading instructional system? Do I introduce phonics? Sight Words? What should I do?"
This simple answer may come as a relief. Research studies have found that the single most important thing you can do as a parent to encourage early literacy skills is to simply read to your child daily. Exposing children to books and reading aloud to them increases the likelihood that they will become successful readers. Shared reading also encourages language development by exposing children to new words. It also introduces them to new concepts, places, and things.
Here are some tips for introducing early literacy skills:
• When reading, turn the pages slowly and ask your child to talk about the pictures in the story.
• Read a book over and over again. Children love repetition and learn from it.
• Change your voice when you read different parts of the story.
• Have a variety of reading materials - non-fiction, fiction and poems.
• Have books at home that are easily accessible for your child.
• Take books wherever you go - in the car, to the park or to a restaurant.
• Ask your child to share their thoughts about the story. For older children, ask them about what they read, this will help them learn to organize their thoughts and increase their comprehension.
Make "story time" a daily part of your loving interactions. When you make reading a positive experience, your child will associate reading as an enjoyable activity. From there, the sky's the limit. |
