Every year, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) conducts trauma and chemical casualty training exercises in which animals are used as "stand-ins" for wounded soldiers. Medical officers at military installations across the nation critically injure thousands of live animals before killing them. In trauma training exercises, live pigs are shot, stabbed, and set on fire and live goats have their legs broken with bolt cutters and cut off with shears. During chemical-casualty training exercises,  live monkeys are poisoned with harmful chemicals. These animals are also often forced to suffer through hellish conditions as they are transported to facilities for this training.

No animal model can adequately duplicate the anatomy and physiology of injuries inflicted upon the human body in war.

The DoD is putting soldiers' lives at risk by using animals in these experiments. The anatomies and physiologies of pigs, goats, and monkeys are drastically different than those of humans; therefore, these animals will respond differently to treatments than humans would.

There are numerous non-animal training methods available, including rotations in civilian trauma centers; the Combat Trauma Patient Simulation system (CTPS); the Simulab Corporation's TrauMan System; and Dr. Emad Aboud's "living" cadaver model, which Dr. Aboud has personally demonstrated for the Army.

Neither the Air Force Expeditionary Medical Skills Institute's Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills nor the Navy Trauma Training Center use animals for trauma training—more proof that it is not necessary to use animals in order to teach these treatment skills.

**This disgusts me in every way, shape and form possible.  People think that the military does nothing wrong and that we're supposed to look at them as heroes.  Well excuse me, but no hero of mine does these sorts of things.  We all seem to be good at b*tching when it comes to our troops getting hurt, when it's their job.  They signed up for it.  These animals don't deserve this torture.  They have nothing to do with this retarded war we have going on right now.  And I don't care who disagrees with me, but I really suggest you not use the "you have no idea what the military is like" because, yeah, I do.

Oh man, I had NO idea this was going on.... That's dispicable. And what kind of sick demented person could actually DO things like that to innocent animals?

Yeah I know.. it's really sickening.  It's a shame that people who we are supposed to look up to are doing this.

For the record, MANY of the militaries personnel do NOT agree with this practice. Many feel that there are more cost effective, humane, and educationally effective ways to get this training done. But, if you are told to do something, then you do it.

In July Congress signed a bill stating that the military could NOT treat animals this way anymore. That no animal can be used for training purposes. So, it's getting there.

There ARE alternatives. And, they are more cost effective. (The military is looking into them now, thank goodness) Animals are entirely different than humans. So, their bodies are completely useless in these excercises, so I'm not even sure why they use them.

And, another thing for the record, the animal training exercises aren't for 'this' war soley. This practice dates way back.

Don't lump all military personnel together in this.  They are heros. And, they do deserve to be looked up too.

Not ALL military personnel are heroes.  Please girl, don't kid yourself.  I was in the military and so was my hubby, so we would know- how many douchebags there are in uniforms.  They really need to stop getting special treatment.  It's their jobs to go to war- they signed up for it.

For the record, I certainly don't blame ALL military personnel for this, most of them have nothing to do with it. I DO blame the DoD, and as for the ones who actually conduct these experiments... I don't know how they can live with themselves.

Well, I cannot speak for other branches. But, my husband is a Marine. And, yes, there were a few idiots that are in the Marine Corps. Most are eventually driven out. BUT, the Marines that my husband served with, are absolutely heroes.

I don't care if they chose to do it. Which is exactly why they SHOULD get recongized, they stepped up for others. They are doing something that the majority of Americans chose NOT to do. Any job in which a person puts their LIFE on the line for another person (in this case, their freedom and security), they deserve their credit. This is inclusive of fireman, police officers, and other law enforement.

So, yes. You are correct. Not ALL military personnel are great human beings. But, the majority are.

But, for the point of the original post. The majority of military personnel feel this is inhumane. And, I'm just saying, don't lump them all together. My husband doesn't agree with this. But, it's difficult to tell your commanding officer that you arne't going to do what you are told. Being prior service, you should know that.
