The mall I work at just hosted Trick or Treat.  It's a nice effort from the mall to host a free, warm trick or treat.  It beats or Cleveland weather, which is usually cold.  And you know the candy is safe.  So Why do parents let their children have such bad manners while doing it.  I think in the two hours we hosted it, I heard "trick or treat" about 20 times and "thank you " even less.  And to boot, not all the kids were wearing costumes!  This is not hand out free candy day, it's Halloween.  You're supposed to dress up and go "trick or treating".

The one thing I had the most problem with, was the older kids cutting in line of the smaller kids.  And their parents told them to do it, so they could hurry up and get out of there!  Where did the Halloween spirit go? Where did the manners go?

I'm a mom of a 5 year old, I've been teaching her manners.  Halloween is the one day of the year she doesn't have to say "please".  But she gets it mixed up with Trick or Treat.  But she always has to say Thank you!

Please tell me that there are other parents out there that still believe in manners!

My son can't say trick or treat of thank you yet.  He's delayed on his speech.  But, I will be thanking everyone for him and he will not be skipping ahead of others.  =)

Ditto what Krystal said.  My son is non-verbal and can't say "Trick or treat" OR "Thank you".  Be he does sign "thank you" in ASL.  Hopefully people will know what it is.  If not, too bad for them I guess.  LOL.

I'm with you - stick to your guns because in the end, it is going to make a big difference in their lives.  We live in a community where very few people teach their children manners - it is absolutely appalling to me, but it is what it is.  Because so few children have manners, my children shine like little lights - we have had so many people comment on how wonderful their manners are, how nice they are and how well-behaved - and they are just 5 and 2.5.  Manners are my personal pet peeve and high on my value scale and I will never give up on insisting my children develop theirs.  Keep plugging away, and I know one day it will make a difference in their lives (impress a girl, get a job, open a door or 2, or bring a smile to someone's face...)
