My husband and I just finished decorating our home for Halloween and we started driving down the street in our subdivision. Two houses were also participating and none of them were down our street. When the trick or treaters come they are done in five minutes.
None of the excitement around us at all. Even during Christmas many people do not decorate nor do we have a lot to do around here. If we move again, I want to move somewhere that is a live and participates in all the holidays.
I thought hey why not Salem Mass... but hubby says no because the gun law say he can't carry his gun.
We won't step foot back in California so San Fran is out.
So is anyone else's city big on the holidays? Please share!

No really they don't celebrate the holidays here at all. They are very religious here and some will decorate for Christmas but we don't have any events nor cool things to do. My son is going to a trunk or treat. We never really decorated either. I bought 5 dollar orange lights and 9 dollar bat lights with two dollar spider webs. Everyone else just does not celebrate Halloween at all.
you should see my neighborhood. a bunch of ppl have gone all-out and have full blown graveyards on their front lawn and all kinds of other decorations. we participate, but don't do all those decorations. i have fall decor and pumpkins, but that is it. i do think it is fun to live in an area where halloween night is a big deal.
I think it is fun. We don't have those areas here at all. Everyone's lights are off except for a small few. I might end up throwing a kid friendly halloween party in my backyard next year.
Like I said, here we are very rural so there's not much point in decorating...heck no one gonna see it anyway. As far as trick or treating....in our small town (I mean small), the businesses that are participating (and really they pretty much all do) put a picture of a pumpkin in their window and then during the afternoon all the trick or treaters go to those business and get candy n stuff. The kids have a ball running around town in costume. This year my dd is going to a over-night halloween party. I think some of the kids that live in town go to the developments at night too.
A kid friendly halloween party in your yard would be great fun. I'll bet the kids and parents would really appreciate it too.
My town sux when it come to Halloween. We have alot of festivals with rides, candy, ect. but as far as trick or treaters we hardly have any. I think it's because there's alot of pedophiles :-(

Some folks around here decorate yards and everything in them...but we're very rural so it's really an individual thing. I do know there are some neighborhoods in Seattle that go all out. I think these days, folks are more concerned with just having a nice holiday and so don't spend what they have on decor. Years ago, there was a pricey neighborhood in the Seattle area that went all out....I mean EVERYONE and they were all entered into outdoor decor contests. Well everyone EXCEPT one person in about the middle of the block. Of course, every year this person was met with many suggestions that he decorate his home. Seemed his neighbors felt he kinda ruined the look of the street by not doing so. He got pretty tired of it as he felt that making sure his family and friends had a great holiday was more important than spending tons of money on out-door decor. Well one year, he decided to decorate his home and yard...he went all out and actually out-did many of his neighbors. I guess he kinda wanted to teach them a lesson because what they didn't know and were soon to find out...was that he had wired speakers into many of the out-door decorations and had buried the wires, etc....just in general made it impossible to turn them off from out-side of the house. He then set his stereo to play continuous Christmas music, turned the volume up and left town for the weekend. They never again complained if he didn't decorate his home. yes, this actually happened, a long time ago, but it happened.
Just always remember that many folks really don't have the funds to purchase out-door decor and spend what they do have on family and friends. Yes, out-door decor is pretty, especially if it snows...but really, whether or not there are a lot of homes decorated shouldn't take away from your celebration. They just celebrate in a different way. Decorations really don't make or break the holiday.
