This year Halloween brought us so much joy!  My daughter wanted to throw a Halloween party.  As Christians, we have suffered rudeness, shock, and being shunned because of our decision to enjoy Halloween.  I see it as a part of childhood, like Easter or Thanksgiving, Christmas, or the tooth fairy.  It is what we make it.  If we make it evil, then yes it is evil.

However, she only wanted to dress up and enjoy some time with her friends, supervised, and at our own home.  We had two Christian friends who backed out, saying they could not go against their beliefs.  That was fine.  I do not wish to make anyone feel as though they should go against their beliefs.

But then something happened in our homeschool group that gave us cause for concern, and we became worried about anyone at all showing up for the party.  It wasn't like my child was planning on practicing magic and pledging herself to Satan.  She just wanted to have fun with friends.  We were becoming concerned with some of the reactions we got, and with some of the unhappiness it stirred up.  We stuck to our guns and explained our own beliefs, encouraging anyone who felt uncomfortable with the idea to please do what was right for them and their children.  I had no intention of doing anything to make or allow the party to be unsafe or careless.

As it turned out, it was the best Halloween ever!  Seven of the kids showed up, two of the parents stayed.  The kids were supervised, had some really neat costumes, ate plenty, laughed, visited, played on the trampoline, drew names for the door prize, filled goodie bags to take home, and even danced some.  The adults enjoyed a small bon fire, good food, and fellowshipping.  My daughter was on top of the world for her one night to ever host her own party.

Thank you, God, for the blessings and the friends.
