I submitted my application & writing sample on a whim, and then when I hadn't heard anything back from them by the end of the month I thought, "oh well". But then I received this great news in my Inbox yesterday:
Congratulations! You have been selected as a new Voices volunteer columnist. We were fortunate enough to receive almost 150 applications this year for fewer than 20 Voices spots. So it was a very tough process for us, but a lot of fun, too. We're honored that you want to be part of this special and growing tradition at The News.
Your friends may wonder why you would want to write for a newspaper: Don't you know newspapers are on their way out? You should know that our audience (and yours, too, now) has never been bigger. We reach millions of people in North Texas every day, and our print base — our core customers — remains strong. We have three zones for the Metro section, which is where most of your columns will appear. And each one goes to more than 100,000 readers.
Numbers aside, there is no doubt that our pages, online and in print, are the best forum for informed debate in North Texas, and we're excited to include you in a leading role to make that forum even stronger.
I can't wait to get started!

Congrats Suze! This is WONDERFUL news! I read this column every Saturday. I, too, have thought about applying for it. I've even written to one of the writers to compliment him on his article. What a GREAT thing! I'm so happy for you. And I can't wait to read your articles. Please, please let me know when yours goes to press. I wouldn't want to miss your thoughts and opinions. Again, Congrats!
