You got suckered.
You were misled.
You allowed ignorance to halt a hugely progressive step forward towards true equality.
Ever since our governor signed our new gay marriage law into effect earlier this year, the "Christian" groups have been running campaigns to have it repealed at the ballot. Unfortunately, they were successful. They accomplished this through fear mongering and lies, incomplete information and twisted sensationalism.
For example, they claimed that second graders would be taught about gay marriage. I have a couple questions about this. First of all, anti-gay marriage voter, WHY does this scare you so much? Marriage is marriage, a union of two people. Teaching gay marriage is the same as teaching about straight marriage, and refusing to teach it doesn't mean it will cease to exist. It exists whether you like it or not.
Secondly, does it scare you so much because you are confusing the term "gay marriage" with "hard core lesbian porn"? Now think about how ignorant this is, to believe elementary school children will be taught about ANY sex, let alone gay sex. Remember the never ending battle to have even a smidgen of straight sex taught in high school?
I read many, many wonderful articles and editorials in our newspaper from secular AND religious folks who got it, who understood what this really is about... but then I saw commercial and commercial spouting lies by the opponents of gay marriage.
Here's my suggestion to the governor, John Baldacci. If gay marriage isn't legal in Maine--it's time that NO one's marriage is legal. Abolish them all. It's pretty much meaningless at this point.
I'm disappointed. And, I believe the people who ran this entire campaign should feel deep shame. You're only embarrassing yourselves.
May your children all be gay, and hopefully not religious at all.
This is too bad. I also wonder- why does the idea of another type of marriage cause so much fear? Could it be because 'regular' marriage is so unsatisfying for so many people?
I am so confused by these types of repeals. How can the people who voted for equality in one breath turn around and vote against it in the next? I'm so so disappointed. Maybe at this point it would behoove all equality supporters to turn their attentions to D.C. and work towards having SSM bans in every state overturned through the long-overdue recognition that they are discriminatory and violate civil rights. *walks outside to scream*
I am so sad. We wanted to get married in Maine. We still have it in NH at least.
Kelley, it passed through the legislature, and then the governor signed it into law. This is the first time it went up for a popular vote. It shouldn't even be able to be put up for a vote, in my opinion.
Ah, I see. Thank you for the clarification. =) That makes it even worse though!
Of course it should be put up for a vote. We have to live with the laws, and we should have a say in what laws we want to live with. It should have been put up for a vote BEFORE the legislature had the chance to pass it. Congress, at both the state and federal level, should represent their constituents' values, not force values and laws onto them.
Don't you know that allowing gay marriage means that pretty soon people will want to marry their dogs? Because, you know, when women got the right to vote, it wasn't all that long when hamsters suddenly demanded the right to vote too! I'm sorry. I love Maine, but today it sucks.

Oh I totally agree! I can't wait to put your civil rights up for a vote! What fun!May-20 Whatever you say, lady.

You're right.
