Holy COW!!!!
I January we LOST Elijah's supplemental insurance!! (medicaid). It was devastating!! Our primary insurance might as well be a freaking joke when it comes to a kid like Elijah!
He had to stop going to therapy, (Occupational, Physical and speech), which he desperately needs. We had to start paying for his giant medical diapers and all his supplies out of pocket. $25-$30 copays for each appointment, (which ranges from every 3 days to every 2 weeks... It adds up!) $2,500 out of pocket for his implant surgery. $400 for an ER visit...the list goes on.
We have been drowing!!!! We FINALLY got to a place where we could pay our bills without borrowing every month, and we get punished by losing medicaid, and having so many MORE bills that we can't make ends meet AGAIN! It's been indescrabably hard...
So for the last 10 months, I have been fighting this decision tooth and nail. Appealing it, applying for other supplemental insurances calling every DSHS office and DDD caseworker I could find... And I finally found our loophole!! It required cancelling our primary before we could get the medicaid back. I can't begin to tell you how scary that has been! Knowing that we have brain surgery coming up and just how much medical help he needs... If something went wrong we would be SO SCREWED!!!! ..But I had to take the chance. I HAD to get better coverage for him! I HAD to get his therapies back and his rehab and surgeries covered. I HAD TO TRY. So I did.
And oh the fear... This last month calling daily trying to get our "last date of coverage letter" Matt's HR person dropping the ball and not getting our request in on time. Even Matt and I arguing about whether I did the right thing... And all of it on MY shoulders alone. I've been pulling my hair out with the stress of it all!
Then today, in the waiting room at the doctor's office, (waiting for an appointment, that I wasn't sure if I would have to pay for out of pocket, because I still didn't know if we got the medicaid, but I did know that our primary insurance ended in October!!!).... My phone rang. It was DSHS. Just calling to let me know that we HAVE OUR MEDICAID BACK!!!!!!! The card should be coming in the mail in 3-5 business days! It's DONE!
I've already called all of Elijah's old therapists to get him on the waiting lists to get back in! I've called the pharmacy to re-order diapers. I've called our PCP, and had him fax the prescriptions for Elijah's diapers and a new special needs carseat with support and a five-point harness! And physical and occupational and speech therapy!!!
We are going to be able to make ends meet again!
I don't have to worry about the financial aspects of $500,000+ surgeries!!!
I don't have to spend $1.53 per diaper, and flinch every time I change my son!
Elijah will get back into therapy, and getting the help he SO needs and deserves!
And my husband better come home with roses for me after all his doubt!!
*biggest happy dance I've done in YEARS!!!!!*

We had to cancel Liam, too, but he will also get state insurance, so it's okay! :)

Wow!!! that is scary! I pray that you and your husband work as a team b/c you can't do it on your own. I hope he supports you and realizes that you need him. I pray that your son's surgeries are a speedy recovery and all the therapies he needs continues.
