Quintin and I went out for a long walk today because there is always a lot to do on Fridays (plus I really wanted to get out of our house which has been more like a hell hole as of late). Stop at the bank to withdrawal some cash monies for grocery shopping, take a quick stop by the food bank to say hi to all the peeps we know there (and steal a cookie along with a quick rest on their seats), then on down to the library for some noon toddler time. The journey got interesting how ever after our stop at Aldis on the way back to pick up some stuff for dinner and a snack.
As we are walking back on our little pre-planned route we are stopping periodically to take bites of our banana till we come upon the bus stop. Figure, "hell, why not. I'm 8 months pregnant and we are barely making any progress as is, let's take a sit and work on a few more bananas".
So here we are sitting there sharing our second banana when "never before met nosey woman" (Nit for short) who was sitting on the bench loudly says "I remember when I was on food stamps too and first became a single mom. The one thing I would always do is make sure my kid had a nutritious breakfast before she went off to school. Eww! you're not eating after each other are you!?".
~puzzled look~ "um.. yeah, why not?".
Now I know I should have gotten up right about that point and continued our way back home, but I thought "Na, this might make a good journal for later, plus Q wants another banana and so do I". We kept right on eating our bananas and she did not disappoint.
Nit- "Because you can transmit diseases that way. I never did it in case my husband would have cheated on me and I had gotten a disease from him doing that I could have transferred it to my daughter by eating or drinking before her or after her. I NEVER share food or drinks with my daughter. I'm glad I never did too because he did cheat on me. Is your son's father still around?".
"Yup, we live together and are working on our second one". ~belly pat~... not that I think she got it, as she was so absorbed by her doom and gloom. I and Quintin continued to share our third banana while she wrinkles her nose.
Nit-"How old is he?"
Me- "He turns two this weekend".
Nit- "doesn't he know how to hold his own banana and feed himself?"
Me- "well of course he does, but he drops things from time to time and the cement is rather dirty".. not that I would ever consider eating anything off of perfectly clean, just installed or sanitized cement at a bus stop. I take a bite with a gleam in my eye as well as probably a half smile and let Q take his finish of the banana.
Nit- "He is going to get sick if you keep doing that".
Me- "Na, it toughens up the immune system. Besides, in the old days it use to be one bowl and one spoon for 8 kids to share, they all lived." ~shrug~
Nit- "Yeah and people were dying left and right of all sorts of horrible things back then".
About then a gaggle of high school kids showed up and she stood up and half ran, half scurried down to the bus stop further down the road. Which was some what convenient as we were just getting up to continue our walk home.
And for just a wee bit today, I forgot about what I saw last night.

What a pleasant person. Doesn't she realize that that much doom and gloom will age her? Wow.
