Went to our integrative specialist today to discuss the latest tests the boys did and determine next steps. We're starting the heavy metal testing. Really looking forward to the results and getting those nasties out of their bodies.
We are also doing another round of neurotransmitter testing. The first test indicated high to very high levels of several neurotransmitters. Some were the excitatory type, some the calming type. We've been supplementing with amino acids for over a year, mainly for Luke. We'll see how much of a change that has made. The doc indicated that their allergic foods, poor digestion, and potential heavy metals were likely triggering the imbalance. We've fixed most of the food issues by eliminating or rotating, depending upon the severity. We've also fixed a lot of the digestion problems.
We also talked about Luke's potential hypothyroidism. He's been on zinc and selenium for about 3 weeks now. Well go back to this doctor in late January, early February (at least by then - if not earlier). She will do more testing at that point, to determine if those supplements fixed the problem. If they don't, that is when she'd start a more aggressive approach.
My insurance is changing for next year. It might be a little more expensive, but it will be much better overall. We plan to visit the real DAN (Defeat Autism Now) doctor for our area, but she doesn't take insurance. Right now I have an HMO that doesn't allow out-of-network. In 2010 I'll be in a plan that covers out-of-network visits at 60%.
