I went into the hospital on July 9th nervous but confident. The pre-op had to be about the worse thing I've ever been through. First they had to put needles with wires into my breast to mark the spots. Okay, now that wasn't much worse than the biopsy I had done a few weeks before. In fact, the same Dr. did it so I felt fairly comfortable. Then he had to do the second part of the procedure. He had to insert a needle with radiation dye into 4 places around my nipple. The dye would leave the needle and go straight to the cancer to mark the trail for the surgeon to cut. I thought I was going to die! I've never felt such pain....it felt like liquid fire going through my breast with each shot. The Dr. said it took 8 seconds for the dye to reach the spot. That was the longest 32 seconds of my entire 51 yrs. of life! You can cut off my arm but don't ever give me dye injections again!
After that I went back to my cubicle and waited to be taken to surgery. The surgeon came in, gave a couple of instructions to the nurse and then said she'd see me in surgery after she changed clothes. I said good-bye to my husband and I remember looking over my shoulder at him as they were wheeling me away. The next thing I know...they are waking me up in recovery. It took awhile to come out of the anesthesia but I came home that evening.
