This is from my friend Terri's mom. Please take a moment to read this!!

As many of you know, my daughter Terri runs a unique non-profit organization in Tanzania dedicated to helping the most vulnerable children there get access to shelter, schooling , healthcare and love & support. The organization has its roots in a single email whose subject read “Wanna buy a cow”? Terri had been volunteering and was inspired one day to launch an email describing how a few dollars could really make an impact to some orphaned children.  The response inspired truly amazing things.

From that original invitation, the Baobab Home has gone on to serve hundreds of children, providing shelter, building homes for at risk families, serving 10s of thousands of nutritious breakfasts and encouraging school attendance among many other valuable services. After 5 years, the largely digital family of donors that started with that informal email has been the engine behind the great work that Terri and her husband Caito do at Baobab.

From communicating with donors in many countries via email, to the web via www.tzkids.org or via Face book, to videos on YouTube sharing the story of Baobab and the incredible volunteers it draws to Tanzania each year, it is no exaggeration to say that Terri has always run Baobab via her trusty laptop (with the help of her supporting cast of course!!).  Unfortunately, Terri’s computer was stolen from her current home Friday as she slept (and as their security guard slept too. Needless to say he’s looking for work!). Terri and her family are temporarily in a somewhat tough neighborhood in an effort to save money for the organization as they continue building on a 15 acre plot that will be the future and long term home of the Baobab Home in a few short months (with luck).

Baobab has always delivered incredible value to those most in need on a shoestring budget and funds are tighter than ever in today’s economic climate which we all feel one way or another. That’s why I wanted to do my part to try and ensure this setback doesn’t derail current plans and programs and appeal to those who are able to make a small contribution towards covering a replacement laptop. Our goal is $950 and I am asking for $5 or $10 from my email friends and/or that you forward this along to anyone you think might be interested in helping out. “Wanna buy a laptop?” might not be as catchy as “wanna buy a cow?”, but as it happens Terri is in the market for another cow for the home as we speak, so if you are able to help out, you’re funding a laptop but indirectly helping buy a cow too!

Vicarious dairy farming aside, Terri has temporarily lost her access to email addresses and so spreading the word a bit would be a big help. Her next few weeks will be tough, so let’s see if we can’t lighten the load a bit by helping her get back up and running right away. You can send donations via PayPal at www.tzkids.org or checks made payable to The Baobab Home can be mailed to 1309 Magnolia Lane, Branchburg NJ. Also, check the blog out via the website and I will encourage Terri to post and update when all is back to normal (whatever “normal” is!).

(For those wondering, Terri backed up her laptop less than two weeks ago, so the data loss is a problem, but not terrible).
